YO GEORGIANS! :)

Mine are EE cross. But the gold coming from BCM I would think they'd get either way.. Or maybe not? I've not grown any of mine out.

Though it would appear I'm about to grow out LOTS of them... LOL

Anyone notice an increase in snakes this year? I have noticed a big increase, a couple of weeks ago it was a ratsnake in the coop, then the dogs caught a kingsnake, yesterday there was a young timber rattler in the hen house.

Course when I spotted the timber rattler the bantam and her two chicks were in the coop so there I am in shorts grabbing her and the chicks and putting them in a crate, then using a broom to encourage Mr. Rattler to use the back chick door and get OUT. Mr. Rattler was dead set on escaping the way he came in (through the main chicken door) and it took a while for him to discover the other door. I have noticed that before, when confronted they want to exit the way they came in and they don't look around for other alternatives.

I have a feeling it is only going to get worse as the summer goes on.

I was talking with my wife about this recently, we've actually seen LESS snakes this year so far than we have the last 2 years. Note I said SO FAR, lol....year before last I killed 5 different timber rattlers all within a mile, one of them was HUGE

although my youngest daughter sent me a pic a couple days ago of a really big copperhead they killed on their patio under one of the chairs. They had walked past it multiple times carrying things to the car, and only when they got in the car happened to look over and see it. Her BF got back out and killed it.

did the dogs kill the kingsnake? hope not for your sake, they actually eat other snakes and are good to let stay around.

No. Most of my dogs are afraid of snakes but the coonhound grabbed up the kingsnake and shook violently (which scares the heck out of me since he would almost certainly do that with a rattler or a copperhead too).

Kingsnake had a couple of marks but I got the dogs away and he left the yard. I don't kill snakes, I keep a couple of garters as pets so I don't want to harm them.

Timber rattlers are rarely aggressive (unless you step on them or come way to close), even when I was shooing the one yesterday out of the coop he never once tried to strike even though he was frightened and curled up in the corner at one point. Copperheads are another matter entirely, they bite first and evaluate the situation afterwards.

I lost several young bantams last year to a ratsnake so I am paranoid and lock the coop up every night, thing is this year I have snakes coming in during the day. I will have to start closing the outdoor small run at night to keep rats out of the feeders as I suspect the snakes are attracted to the rodent scent trails and then find their way into the henhouse.
