YO GEORGIANS! :)

welcome aboard!

before you run off to the flea markets buying chickens from people you don't know if you can trust or not there are a couple really great ladies here who hatch and sell. Carcar and flower are probably the most active, but if you read through you'll see others who do as well. carcar might have a couple or a hundred or so you might be able to get her to sell you..........

do you need a rooster? I have a couple extra purebred ameraucana cockerels I could part with as well

I will more than likely be selling my BGJ roo, so yes, I will be needing a roo when I do. I have a thread in the new members section showcasing what I have atm, if anyone Is interested. I am looking to buy goo layers or possibly trade. Just let me know :)

Is Sweet PDZ biodegradable?

I've started using it on my poop board and combined with diatamaceous earth, it pretty much turns into scoopable cat liter which makes keeping the coop clean a very easy task.

Anyways, I need to change it out and was trying to figure out if I can just dump it into my yard or into my "soon to be" compost.
I don't change the pdz in my poo tray, I just scoop it. I've added to it, but there's really no need to change it out from what I understand about it. Speaking of that, I need to go get my pooper scooper and clean mine. Time to change out the straw inside the coop too, although I'll have to work on the tractor a bit before I can set the dump carry all down there to scoop it into

Hey y'all! Luck is running poor today. As it so happens, while I was fooling around on my phone learning my new chickie social outlet & out in my shop/barn, a snake made its way into my bantham coop. (I only had 2 since someone took it upon themselves to claim the other 4 & we had bonded.) Regardless, the snake decided to take out my sweet black barred-rock cochin bantie rooster. There was no saving him even tho he was kicking when I ran up. :'( Anyway, this left his lil life mate with traumatized & no companion. The reds & Cali whites I have, attacked the lil ones before, so I know I cant put her with them. What can I do to help her? Can she be a pet? Does she have to have other chickens or can a full time TSC employee be her flock companion? I am terrified to put her back in the bloody coop. Im also scared the shock messed her up and dont know what to do. I will prolly keep her with me at work tonight or my Boyfriend might take her with him until he picks me back up.

What can I do to help my favorite sweet snuggling baby?

I was thinking of changing it out because of the little "extras" that can't be scooped. I may just do it your way, though. That sounds much easier!

If you were closer, I'd come help you with your coop. I just hauled out a bunch of bedding and replaced it in mine last weekend. I figured it had to be close to 6 months since I first did it. The deep litter method makes things so much simpler and my girls are quite happy.

yes no doubt about the deep litter method. This is still the original straw I put in mine back at the end of the build in March. Only reason I'm thinking of changing it out is because they've been in there since they were 5 weeks old and all those chickie feathers they shed as they grow are freakin every where! LOL Was thinking of taking this straw and mulching my garden with it, or starting another compost pile. I have a big bag of shavings I'm going to use up next, but I have to say I've really liked the straw

In my personal opinion, she would be happier with another chicken in the coop with her. They are flock animals.

Have you discovered how the snake got into the coop? You could bring her inside for a few days/weeks while you worked on making the coop predator proof, although in all honesty, no matter how hard we try to protect our flocks, sometimes predators get to them anyways. Just do the best you can and know it's enough.

SO glad you posted this! I was going to just do the weekly clean out until cooler weather hit us because I was told deep litter method year round in the south generates too much heat, but if it's working for you or anyone else, then I'll stick with my original plan of doing the deep litter. I have DE in the coop under the bedding and it seems to keep it pretty dry. No poop decks yet because I second guessed the weekly cleanout but your post just saved me a ton of work. I'm all about work smarter not harder and with severe ADD the deep litter is a more logical choice. If a task takes too long, I'll lose interest real quick.
