This morning my truck thermometer read 35. BRRRR

I'm wanting to move my 3 week old babies (24 Buff Orps, Dominiques, Easter Eggers & Ameraucanas) outside.
Almost all are covered in feathers, except for the poofs of down on their heads.
I'm looking at a rabbit hutch with 3 solid sides, about 3' deep, 5' wide, and 3' high.
Front door has wire. I can add the heat lamp to keep them warm, but even with that, is it possible? Are they old enough?

My new building is in limbo, and I really need these chick OUT of the living room!

Have anyone else's chickens started moulting? All my girls are moulting atm and it looks like big bird exploded in my backyard.

Oh yes! One of my girls is so naked right now. She is in a hard molt. She had no feathers on her legs, her tummy, her breast, and her wings were looking space. lol She has tiny pin feathers finally starting to grow. She doesn't look so silly now. I have been giving her extra protein to help her along. That has helped

Hello! We used to keep ours in the garage (in a large dog kennel) until we finally just decided to remodel the coop and build a brooder added on to the coop. THANK GOODNESS! The hutch sounds nice. You may could place the wire door away from the wind (if that is possible) but I would totally go for it. You may could also place a piece on linoleum (or wood) on the floor of the hutch to keep some warmth in. I use linoleum the floor of my brooder because it is easy to scape off poop every morning and pull out and wash every week or so. We bought a brooder plate from Premier 1 Supplies and we love it! It is like the Ecoglow from Brinsea. The plate only gets hot underneath and you can raise the legs as the chicks grow. Any adult/child can touch the plate and not get burned. I usually leave it in the brooder until I notice that they are sleeping on top of it and not underneath it anymore. Then I remove it. This last time I removed the plate at 6 weeks of age (that is also around the time most momma chickens start to ween their young chicks). I would add some heat source for another week or two but that is just my opinion (not sure if a brooder plate would fit in your hutch and it does need an electrical outlet to plug in to). They will let you know if they are unhappy by peeping that loud "I am not happy right now" peep.

I just love baby chicks!!!!

Let me know if you are interested. I'd prefer to find a home for him over the stew pot as my daughter has decided he is her favorite (I let each kid adopt 1 that we promise not to eat ).

Does anyone feed organics feed? If so, where do you get it and how much do you pay?
I have been feeding countryside organics. It's around $38 for 50 pounds at the feed store, buts it's a drive for me. The website sells it for $25 or so, but shipping is outrageous!

Tractor supply has Organic feed for $20 or $25 for a 25lb bag. Not sure where you are located, but there are a bunch of them in GA.

I know these two are boys.
Herman is the front one, He has a crest and a very fluffy neck, almost a mane.
Bo-Bo is the one in the back, our little Beau Junior.


Why do you think the little brown one in back is a male? Looks girly to me. These were both Easter Egger mixes. You got 4 EE and 2 SW chicks as I recall.


First two are questionable. no crest.


Definitely a boy. Some SF have no crest, but I would think these would since both the mom and dad have crests. Could be one of the EEs with SF dad.

Again, not clearest photo. This one looks like one of my Polish mixes, but I didn't put any Polish eggs under the broody so not sure about this one either. All the eggs under the broody were from my colored egg layers(4) and 2 SF.

I knew #1 and #2 were EE, and if the brown one is a girl I will be so happy!
He/She has always been the biggest by a bunch, and the first one into everything.

#3 is the questionable, #4 & #5 I am fairly sure on.
Hmm, no pics of #6? Don't want her left out.

Grr! No pics on phone. Will have to take more.
#6 is a pretty blue large bird.
