I need help or advice...would our weather here in Georgia delay hatching? I sat eggs under my silkie on the 5th. Today is 21-22 day but no pipping. I grabbed a couple out from under her, candeled them, a few veins attached to air sac, scarce movement. No pipping. They have a heater on the cc oops all day long, they are in my garage to, out of extreme cold. So will it be much longer? Would the chilly air affect the hatch time? 8 eggs have had movement of chicks in them. She stays on her nest to.

Yes. Lower temps = longer hatch times
higher temps = shorter hatch times

These are just a few of the things from the paper today...obviously the statutes are being written by people who have no clue of what they are doing...they don't know a thing about raising chickens and have NO IDEA of the passion we chicken people have concerning our birds.

We are a rural county and really need none or very few regulations concerning back yard chickens. This coming at a time when most cities/counties are relaxing regulations due to difficult economic times as a way to assist citizens. I'm appalled at what they are planning.

There are so many things they don't understand. For instance, there are no hatcheries (that I know of) within hundreds of miles of us where we can pick up baby chicks. The minimum order from most is 15 chicks and others are 25. Where are you going to get 6 chicks if you want hatchery stock which many people do...??? You could order the 15, keep 6 and sell 9...If regs allowed you to sell...!

I have 10 plus acres and under these regulations I would only be able to have 24 chickens...!

I (and many others) have invested in incubators and sell off excess chicks. Under these regs that would not be allowed. Also can't sell table eggs or hatching eggs...for which the GA dept of ag clearly allows without license if eggs are picked up at your place and sold at other locations if you have a license. Does the state regs supersede local...?

If your have had experience dealing with "bureaucrats" like this I would appreciate hearing from you.

That is super scary! I'm guessing that that to have more than that you will need a license or permit of some sort.
I'm in Bartow, and with 10+ acres specifically so I can have livestock and poultry. I would be at any and all meetings where this is being discussed.
 
I was planning on worming my chickens today with Wazine17. Last night I looked it up and found that you needed to not eat (or hatch = deformities) the eggs for 2 weeks and then you need to re-worm after two weeks. So that would have been a month of no eggs. But, I found a product called Rooster Booster Triple Action Wormer that you can treat and eat! So, I ordered some. You just mix it in their food. It kills 3 types of worms within days. Anybody try it?

They did also suggest not worming in the winter because the chickens are already stressed by the weather. Should I wait or are they talking about far north weather?

Thanks!! I'll check it out. And I personally would think stressful = northern winter. We have a break right now anyway so I'd think you're good. :)

someone needs to be at that meeting with the ability to explain in full that the state requires the proper licenses and gives the classes to ensure that both eggs and chickens being sold are being handled properly. There might be someone (more than one) on the commission who is totally uneducated and thinks "these backwoods rednecks are gonna make people sick selling unsafe eggs"

if it's not that, then it's pure greed by someone who realizes that us folks who have enough chickens to get and sell eggs are taking a few dollars out of their pockets
 
ok I got the AMs moved into their new pen last night. I haven't put the nests in yet. I picked up some of the frosting buckets at walmart, the rectangular shaped ones. I was thinking of using these for nests like Feathersaloft did the kitty litter buckets she has, but these are only 9x11. I'm wondering if this will be too small, any ideas?

The last one I got from Wal-Mart I asked for the larger bucket also may have if you ask for large icing bucket may be able to get from Ingle market Also maybe you could use a 5 gallon bucket.
