just went back and looked at her post. this is what it says:

ME - love those welsummers, mine will be here in just over two weeks! did this guy provide the cedar chips or was that all you could find? just curious

HER - He put the cedar in. But there are no shavings in the pens, just straw.

Asking for advice: I'm caught for the first time in the midst of a continuous hatch in my incubator. Fertile eggs were all supposed to arrive with in one day of each other, well that has turned in to 1 week of each other. Now I'm going to be in a pickle come rest time for hatching. My only broody hen already has several Mottled Cochin eggs under her little fluffy self, she is only an option if none of those hatch. Does anyone have any DIY proven incubator ideas that would be cheaper than $44.95 at TSC for a still air unit?

are you looking for a hatching place? I'm seriously considering making one of the DIY styrofoam cooler type home made incubators. I've been reading about them over in the 'hatching 101' thread, and think it might be great to use as a hatch out point and keeping a dozen new eggs in the bator every week for continous hatching possibilites

something else I was pondering today, if I could find a block of styrofoam or a square piece the same size or bigger than my incubator, could I cut out and make an insert/spacer to raise the top of the incubator 4 or five inches, make a small frame with HW cloth mesh and just make my incubator taller/deeper and just have it all right there together. I'd be adding another 'shelf' inside for the hatch point and leave the egg turner on the top.

heck it could be made out of wood if I could get the fit tight enough......and that would allow me to put an access point in. I have a piece of 3/4 plywood out in the shop, this might just be the easier way to accomplish what I want

Hey that gives me an idea. What about at Home Depot or Lowes they have that insulation foam board. I have extra bits and bobs of boards and plywood. I guess it could be made out of wood or that foam board I could make my own size as your mentioned instead of a regular drink cooler.

that could work. I wonder what the thickness options are, and if it would be sturdy enough to cut and just make a deeper 'wall' on this incubator. Looking at some of the home made incubators from coolers though, that may very well be the best option. just a cheap cooler and a few dollars worth of lights and a fan. I know I have plenty of old chargers around to plug in and power a computer type fan....
 
You could glue two peices to of 1/2 or 3/4 foam board to make 1 in or 1 1/2 walls just use foam board glue the other glue melts foam board

Candle them. Everyday, if you need to. When you see the chick has pipped internally, stop turning and up the humidity. You will see the chicks beak/head in the clear air space. You can google it. Lots of info on you tube.

Yep this is what I had to do when I got my duck eggs off the ransacked nest way back when.. I had no idea how long Mama Mallard had been sitting. Just had to wing it and keep an eye out for signs of readiness.
