Yes. We are not allowed to sell a sick bird or a bird that does not appear to be in good health. They are also considered merchandise which employees cannot take damaged merchandise home. Thus they have to be written off and given to a caretaker of sorts to give them the best quality of life possible until they either die or until they return to health and thrive. @OohLaLa got one of these chicks this week. Normally if i notice a chick being picked on in the tub or a chick who just isn't thriving with the others i will simply find the right family for it and slip it in their box as a freebie. Normally the young child or the girls in the family take it as a parenting challenge and love the opportunity to try to save the little bird.

This has been my experience as well. The ones I got that were shipped are having some real problems with it, but all my local pick ups and home hatched have always been fine.
 
So since my eatin' egg hens are kinda bullies to my younger BR flock, I thought I'd throw them in the Brahma pen until my BR roo matures a bit and then throw them back with him. In the meantime I went out to see where the new girls of the pen chose to roost for the night. They made themselves right at home on the main perch. I asked hubby what the weight limit is on this thing.. Big Boy alone weighs probably 14# and his ladies aren't light eaters either!

So then you get to keep the bird if you nurse it back to health and you don't have to give it back?

Nope, at that point it has been written off in the system and it belongs to you. Each store normally has 1-2 people on their "list" and the receiver will contact that person. The birds will need to be picked up by the end of each day. Some people have had very good results with the birds. A little patience and vitamins and electrolytes and it's like nothing ever happened.

I got one of these chicks from our local TS a few years back. It survived and did well until the bear broke down the door to our coop and ate her. Was so sad!

When some of the stores are receiving 300-600 chicks a week there's always 1 or 2 that will need some special care. I would ask to speak to whoever has impressed you in the past with customer service. I had someone who worked at my store in the past who always made sure the sick or injured chicks went to a friend of hers farm. I can almost guarantee you if anyone were to ask her to be on the list she would play dumb about the existence of the list. Either speak to a SM, ASM or Receiver preferably.
