.22 caliber with rat or snake shot at 25 feet in the butt won't kill them but will put their butts close to the ground as they're leaving and howling and they quickly lose interest in chickens. I know this from experience!

and this is considered a wounding shot, and will cause more problems than just killing it. pretty much the same as shooting one with a bb gun.

I caught one of my leghorns yesterday afternoon pecking at the green egg from my OE. So at least I know she wasn't eating her own children.

I don't know if it's just because the egg is green, so I moved the OE in with the ameraucanas, I know I'll be able to tell the blue from the green egg

now to keep an eye out for any more eaten eggs. If need be, I'll take her out, bad thing is the leghorns aren't big enough really to fool with cleaning and cooking....I may just turn her into a free range girl and let nature take it's course

Sounds like a plan. I had the same plan if my BR was ever caught.. But I could never tell if SHE was breaking the eggs or if she was eating them after they fell/broke (there were a couple found in precarious areas). Since I've cut down on numbers and can keep better track, all eggs have been in the box and none eaten. Whew!! I was dreading getting rid of one of my BR.

I have a BO hen that went broody and hatched 6 chicks. I have her in a small cage with her chicks in the feathered out small chick room
(horse stall) and would like to put the chicks in a brooder with other small chicks and turn her back out with the flock. Is there any special way I should go about this or just do it. If you've had this situation please let me know! I've tried to research this but no one goes into if it's a problem to remove the chicks.

Not so PapaChaz. The rounds I use in a long barrel revolver won't penetrate at 25 feet but will sting very much. Three dogs that live on the farm next to mine had a butt load a couple of years back with no ill effects but they don't try to come on my place anymore. You can set up a thin plastic bottle or cardboard to find the range you should use. I would only shoot to scare or kill but never to wound. I always shoot in the rear and never in the face.

Don't the chicks have to stay with mom until they're weened? I think bottle feeding a bunch of chicks would be a lot of trouble.

So as things go while trying to name dogs, you THINK you want to go a certain route but then it just happens. The puppy was tearing around the house terrorizing the older dogs and GAM mentioned him being like the Tazmanian Devil. So I started calling him Taz. I kinda liked it. She wasn't sure if I was serious and I told her if she messed with me I would start calling him Daffy. And so it progressed and the conversation continued and a coin was flipped and the kids voted and there was a veto............ the dog's name is Doc.
