I received chicks by mail yesterday. Five of the have some dried poo under their vents. Just a little and they are still passing poop. Is this pasty butt? Shod I clean them with warm water if poo can still pass?

It's how it starts.. Each movement can stick to what's there and could eventually close off their little hiney. I would clean it, or at least watch it closely. :)

Three dogs that live on the farm next to mine had a butt load a couple of years back with no ill effects but they don't try to come on my place anymore. You can set up a thin plastic bottle or cardboard to find the range you should use. I would only shoot to scare or kill but never to wound. I always shoot in the rear and never in the face.

a BB gun on low power won't penetrate either, but I was warned by the LEO NOT to shoot them with a bb gun just to pop them and run them off, it's considered cruelty, and does carry a fine. Just passing on what I was told. I would bet the mortgage if you ask animal control or an LEO they'll tell you the same applies to your rat shot.....

as for putting your broody back with the flock, here's what happened when I did it last year. I left the chicks in the separated part of my coop and run. She about went NUTS trying to get to them, so I moved them to my stock tank brooder under the carport for a couple weeks and let her forget about them. She had no problems going back to the flock, but I'd say if she can see or hear the chicks, she'll go nutso trying to find/get to them....

I consider it cruel if a dog has one of my chickens in it's mouth but I'm not going to talk to an LEO about it anyway so we'll just let this ride.

Thanks for the info on the broody! The chicks will go in the garage so she'll never know where they are. Do you remember how long before she started laying again?
