I candle my eggs around day 6-7 and discard the ones not fertile.  I've even been know to cook those eggs up and give them to my chickens... Yes, even after 7 days in the bator.  It's like they have been slow cooking.  They don't smell so they are good to go to the chickens.  Anyway, don't be afraid to candle them.  Also, removing the turner is important.  The chicks inside the eggs need time to move around to the best hatching spot for them.  If your turner keeps going, it confuses them.  Hope your duck eggs do well.

The duck eggs made me initially hold on removing the turner. Then I just plain forgot.

Now I'm just waiting on the new incubator guts

Ummm, I've got turkeys in lockdown and I just realized that I know nothing about turkeys. Can they eat chick starter? They will go to the guy who unexpectantly brought me eggs to hatch last month.

They need a higher protein feed ... we feed a specialty flock starter for turkey, pheasant, game birds, etc.

I almost never take the eggs out of the turner in the cabinet. When I do take them out and place them in the hatching tray I end up with more chicks having trouble than when I just leave them turning. The biggest hazard in the cabinet is the plinko like descent into the hatch tray at the bottom.

Yep, just not medicated, put a chick or a young one that is eating and drinking, Turkeys need schooling and it's monkey see monkey do, turkeys really are not the smartest birds on the block

I don't have one of those.......bahahaha.... He has his drawers ALL in a bunch, started telling me to shut up and move on if I wasn't interested in it, then finished up with 'god bless you brother'

His cabinet really does look good, but wow at the profit margin he has on a $50 piece of plywood LOL anyway, I'm done. He didn't even thank me for keeping his post bumped either, the nerve!

I agree. It was a nice exterior, but WAY too much.

We are working to finish our cabinet, just ordered the thermostat, heater and fan set.
Mine will include the 4 turners I've collected, but if I DID have $700 to spend, I would definitely buy the GQF one instead!

So far the outer case is done, door is in progress. Shelves are also in progress. The shelf holders are there, the shelves still need their 1/4" hardware cloth.
The false wall is on hold until we get the electronics installed, for spacing.



My last hatch was umm, interesting.
I had 14 Speckled Sussex eggs for a friend, 24 duck eggs for the friend, and then 1 silkie and 2 EE eggs just to fill it up.
I tried a more hands off approach, didn't candle til lockdown.
NONE of the SS eggs were fertile. Less than half the eggs were fertile.
My 3 eggs all looked good.

I didn't turn off the turner, and then more or less forgot it from Tuesday night.
Friday night I got home, and remembered the eggs.
Went to pull out the eggs, and noticed the silkie egg was zipped and empty.

Found the silkie sitting in one of the egg cups, riding back and forth!
Pulled her out, left the EE eggs.
Last night found one of them hatched, pulled him out and the last egg was pipped on the bottom of the egg.
Waiting to see how that ends.

Much better than when I stressed over them, candled at day 8 or so.
All I've done is add water every few days. And if the last one hatches, that would be 100% of the fertile eggs!

Plus Eric has some of my eggs, due to hatch on Wednesday I believe.

I was thinking Wednesday also but once you told me about the Hatchabatch being a day behind I did the math and they should hatch Thursday. Still some surely will hatch Wed. I put them in on Thursday March 31st. @ 8:44pm and they go on lockdown tomorrow. I plan to candle them at lockdown.

I used the egg cartons to hatch in the past 3 hatches and it was great and way less mess. What amazes me is when there is an empty spot the chicks will get in it and sleep as if it is their nest. I cannot remember who mentioned it originally but thanks to those who did!

I had same luck in both cardboard and foam cartons. I cut holes in the bottoms and on the front and back of each. Hard to see all in the pic but gives an idea. Have found when using the exacto knife it is easier to do triangles and have also found that it is easier to stab a finger if said finger is in the way. Felt like an idiot but hoping I learned from it.

Thankfully I just got the tip of the blade and stopped. Felt like when I went to the doctor when I was little and they stabbed my finger. Now they prick the finger but I swear they stabbed them back then.

Does anyone know what antibiotic I can give my rooster for an injury? He got hurt pretty bad on his face and has a swollen eye. I'm worried about infection. I tried posting in the emergency area but haven't gotten a reply.

I got a lucky pic the other day. Stanley was struttin his stuff & eyed me with the camera out, even though I was trying to be sneaky. He sees me, then turns to the side and straightens up. Even gave me the good side so the blu-kote doesn't show. LOL
I think he knows how handsome I think he is!

That's right. I set my Hatchabatch a day later, and it says Thursday.

And my last one hatched So 100% of the fertile eggs this time, with minimum effort.
I literally added a cup of water once a week and didn't even check the thermometer or wet bulb.

So since I hate to set up a brooder for 3 chicks, I had to buy a few more. LOL

Vetericyn? I don't think it's an antibiotic, but it is for wound care, etc. On their website, it shows a product called Pink Eye Spray, but says it can be used for irritation or eye abrasions also.

They also make an Opthalmic Gel, too. I think I saw that at TSC one time, but I can't remember.

It says that it's not an antibiotic though. I think it is to prevent infection.
