Do you think it is the bottom shelf that isn't getting the right temp/hum, or do you think the eggs were stressed?Flowerbh, I'm thinking this monster is a Beau baby. Half again as large as anyone else and feathered legs.
Side of his head was a little matted. Will cleanup later.
How many of you do a strict lockdown and how many remove fluffy babies mid hatch?
I wasn't going to open but had a couple who were pinned under other eggs.
You need to follow your gut, what ever thought came to mind first you need to listen to.The second egg was a very late quitter. It was moving vigorously in there around day 18-19. I know the 21 day thing supposedly isnt a hard & fast rule when a momma is hatching them herself. Not sure why it quit. I was giving it til today (25) a d was gonna toss it before goingto the auction. However, sophia managed to crack the shell, membrane still intact. I reached in to take it out, she pecked at me and go the egg instead. Shell in pieces, membrane still intact, surprisingly.
No breathing or moving, obviously. Looks fully grown to me (maybe). Part of me wahts to open it up and see what the deal was. On the other hand I'm afraid it's gonna trigger bad feelings andbe too much a reminder of our daughter's situation.
The biology nerd in me is saying "just suck it up and do it.. ".
The odd thing: the egg that hatched is the one I was SURE was gonna be a quitter.
Catch 22.
it doesn't hurt to open the cabinet long enough to add water. you know broody mama gets off the eggs every day, right?First hatch in the new incubator is hopping along.
Learned a few things.
Most of the 21 on the top shelf came from my eggs, the 48 on the bottom were from the egg swap.
My top shelf is doing great. So far 10 of 21 are hopping around the hatching trays.
Bottom shelf has 5 of 48 so far. A few pipped but we aren't through yet.
I need a hose to top off water in my new cabinet without opening.
My hatching trays DO need a back (or chicks drop off the back when drawers are pulled forward.
Might need a water pan on the bottom, instead of 2 on top. Although I will need a screened cover so no one somehow falls in.

Do you know what colored egg this one came out of? I do have a Brahma hen and a Brahma roo. If this chick came from a medium brown egg, it could be a true Brahma. But, yes, it looks like one of Beaus. Hope you have more to hatch.

My guess is a temp difference in the shelves, even one degree cooler will make a difference in how long it takes.
