YO GEORGIANS! :)

And, BTW, if can be caused by wild birds pooping in your chicken yard. Almost impossible to protect against. So, don't blame your daughters.
wild birds would have to perch on the run and aim it right through the hardware cloth......they can't get into it at all, half of the run is covered completely, I really don't think this is anything 'wild bird'

I don't blame my daughters at all, they were basically just collecting eggs, and at that coop it's done from the outside anyway, wouldn't have been anything either of them carried in

Respiratory Infection going around!!

A friend of mine that had the gapeworm or so she thought kept trying to help them and in the end I called a vet at the University of Miss and found out that a respiratory infection that is going around and usually misdiagnosed is called Mycoplasma Gallisetpicum (hope I spelled that right) and can be carried from parent to egg to chick. The chicks she has that are sick came from Ladds and from 2 different breeds and 2 different batches about a month apart. He said chances are the breeders they are using all have it. They could get it from eating together or drinking together or maybe when one is eating something and the other grabs it out of their mouth. Which we have all seen!

Symptoms: They make a gasping noise, don't want to eat or drink and may have a discharge from the eyes or nose. Some may have one symptom and some may have all. Some chickens may not even show symptoms.

He said to give them Oxytetracycline for 3-4 days and if that doesn't seem to work after about a week go with Tylosin (which is expensive). Usually the Oxy does the job he said.. You may want to treat everyone if one has it because chances are other if not all have it as well.

NO I DID NOT GO TO HER HOUSE AND LOOK AT HER BIRDS!! I WANTED TO BUT I AM NOT SLOW!

thanks Eric... this is one that I hatched from my original AM's last sept, I don't think it's that parent to chick thing because she's the only one. Getting ready to head over to Hollands in the next few minutes

oh, she doesn't have any discharge from her eyes or nose

Ok everyone.  I have chicks available!!!

Crested Cream Legbars
4 Lavender Ameraucanas
Olive Eggers
Easter Eggers
Fun mixed breeds

Let me know ASAP!

I am SO tempted by those mixes, but if I brought home more chicks my boyfriend would KILL me! We just got the youngins moved outside.

Does this mean you are ready for your rooster you had me holding the past month? :D

Almost! We still have to put the paneling on the coop, we managed to get the run done and some temporary shelter done. We Just had to get those "chicks" out of the house ASAP. They're like 14 weeks now and had WAY outgrown the brooder.

Hopefully just one more week left. I'll have to remind my boyfriend he said I could get him, too. He's probably forgotten.

Problem is, if she has been adding eggs daily, they are at all different stages of development.  She will only sit on eggs for about two days after the first ones hatch.  You will either have to incubate the others until hatch, or lose them.  Next time, do as Papa said....marked the original ones (I put a big red heart on mine with a marker) and gather all the added ones every day.  We all had to learn thru trial and error!  You will enjoy all this more the second time around when you know what to expect.  Just relax and let Mama Broody do her thing!

I agree 100%! This was definitely unexpected. She caught me completely be surprise. Next time I will know what to do from the start. The good thing is I caught the laying under her about 3 days in. Hopefully I caught my mistake early enough to lessen the chances of the issue of her leaving them. I have just sat back and watched her. And enjoyed the experience now.

oh I forgot to tell you I have bramaha mixed with Black Austrolorps, funny black feeted chickens running around here!! The big boy went to live in Ellijay, he did his job before he left.

Do any of you that had broodies find your broodies raised up the chicks only to go broody again!!! I'm back to 3 broodies, really they want to be baby machines,

absolutely they do. Today is the first day I've gotten a blue egg from each of my AM hens, only to have one of them decide she wants to sit on them again. She hatched some just before the broody hatched my swap eggs, and now that she has had her almost 3 weeks to start laying again, the first broody wants to hatch more.

ummmm, no. She's in isolation, we'll see if being alone breaks her. That's all it took last year, but with the weather being hot this time, it might not work. We'll see
