I lost two of my free range roosters last night. They've been out and about for almost two weeks, didn't have enough about them to roost off of the ground, instead they've been under the coop. Something got two of them last night, feathers every where........

the other two are back in the coop, even though I didn't really want to put them back in there.

on another note, I put my AM rooster in the luxurious garden setting chicken tractor. Here I am being Mr Treat man, taking them cold watermelon, and the ole dude about got me when I turned my back to open the divided section for the little ones to get some too.....so he goes to time out

This is my first summer with my birds. Is it normal for my rooster to Molt this early? He has been losing his bigger/longer tail feathers.
 
how old is he? are you sure they're not getting pulled out by one of the others? Yes, even one of the hens could be pulling them out. I have a hen that does just that, I've put the 'peck no more' stuff on him and it helped a good bit. It was back in the winter too come to think about it, I upped the feed from the 16% to 22% protein and after that it seemed to stop too


I'm not sure they even lose their tail feathers when they molt??

He is as old as the oldest hens. I haven't seen one mess with him. He seems to have pretty good control. I read on here where one said their rooster molted his whole tail
 
Papa where can you buy the spray? Also the highest feed I have found is like 16% or 18% where can I find higher?

it's a liquid but not a spray, TSC has it. I got mine at the local feed store. Wear rubber gloved when you put it on......mine wasn't pulling tail feathers, she was pecking the middle of his back pulling them there. Maybe she was repaying him for how rough his spurs are..........

Maybe I should find the photo I took of all the cats hanging out next to a local restaraunt. It was kinda creepy. And funny. And really just creepy. And it is NOT photoshopped. I was in the right place at the right time & got lucky. Which never hapoens. :D
