YO GEORGIANS! :)

Our run houses our coop. It's an open (and cheap) coop design that will help with the crazy GA heat but also is adjustable to add any insulation for the cold. Speaking of which, I've read alot about how the folks in northern regions protect their chickens but is that needed in our climate? I'm a sucker for cold so to me GA gets "cold weather" but I know we don't get truly cold weather that often. I know it's probably more cold up in North GA but what did you do for the winter season? Does that breed need anything extra since they are cold hardy?
Nah, they'll be find with no insulation in the coop. As long as there's not gaping holes with gale force winds blowing through there, they'll be ok.

I don't think I could ever live in North GA because I'm too much of a wimp when it comes to cold weather. Don't know how you do it!
Tell me about it. My wife is Vietnamese and she starts complaining about the cold when it starts getting down in the 60's.

Every broiler house stands to profit on a total loss of flock they get paid by head at market value + 10% where as the chicken slaughter houses don't take the chickens that cannot walk and they are paid by the head that ends up T the production facility alive! At what ever rating the market is for that day usually lower than overall average price. So If it's a total loss the farmer stands to gain a profit larger than what he/she normally would !

If it keeps on, no one will be able to afford insurance of any kind. Then where will they be? The insurance industry is no longer a "risk" industry. They simply offset payouts by raising premiums next year. I've never had an insurance claim on my house and the market value of my house goes up and down with the market. Yet my insurance premium steadily rises every year. Sure, I can go to the hassle of shopping around and saving a few dollars by changing companies, but then that premium will rise the next year as well. I hate insurance companies.

I see where you're coming from, GAM; however, the part that I don't like about this AI scare is that the GDA is behaving as if chicken fanciers and non-commercial chicken farmers are part of the problem. We're not, but the GDA is acting as if we are by banning swaps, sales, and shows. We're not spreading AI, so they should leave us alone IMHO. To me it seems like guv'ment overreach.
See, and it makes perfect sense to me ... events like what they have temporarily banned are the exact kind of place that has the potential to cause widespread harm. It only takes one bird in a setting like that to send the virus all over the place. And since there is no testing required for such events, this is (in my opinion) a reasonable safety step. We might not be where the cases are currently being found but it only takes 1 in the wrong setting. If they really had it in for backyard chicken folks they would have shut down all sales and there would be tightening of backyard flock restrictions instead of the broadening that we see in so many areas.

I agree with GAMarans. In my young adulthood I acquired some chickens from an animal auction. They were sick. I had many different breeds of chickens, raised from chicks at the time. Sad to say that was the end of my back yard chickens for many years. I complained to the auctioneer who owned the place. He let me know that it was my problem. I haven't went to places like that again and don't plan to.
