Hello everyone! Add me to the list please :)

I am a newbie. I thought we had 5 Ameracauna, 3 Rhode Island Red, 4 Barred Rock. After reading some of these posts - I am assuming those Ameracauna are EasterEgger.

That being said - I'm not fussy on breed as my girls are just for my girls to have some responsibility and for me to enjoy watching (and get some eggs of course). Hubby reluctantly agreed to 4 - as you can see I accidentally got a few more LOL

I am stunned at how fast our ladies are growing. For my fellow Georgians I would love a little advice. What do you guys do to help them through our humid hot summers? What do you use in the nesting boxes? Do you provide for dust baths or can they somehow utilize our clay?

Hi, Jenn! Just make sure there is a LOT of ventilation. We run fans all the time in the barn and keep all five windows open (hardware cloth locked screens keep predators out). In summer, we use pine shavings in the nests. In winter, we use hay which is warmer. They'll find a dustbath and make one for themselves. You do not have to do anything for them in that regard. They are great earth tillers, even GA clay.

Currently they are about 5 weeks old and still in the brooder with heat lamp. We change their pine shavings once a week and I sprinkle grit (crushed granite) and mealworms into all the pine shavings (they scratch looking for stuff so that is why I added the worms - I felt bad they did so much scratching and weren't finding anything). They get fresh food (chick crumble/starter) and water every morning. We have treated them with some leftover greens (uncooked Brussels sprouts and spinach/kale as well as cooked but not seasoned ends off our sweet potatoes). My girls hunt crickets in the evening and give them those about twice a week.

Any advice, suggestions, corrections would be greatly appreciated. I want my ladies to be happy and healthy.

And last question for now. We ordered a coop and it had a 14-foot run on it. We will build our next one. This is sort of our "starter" setup (though my sweet spouse is unaware of my plans for flock expansion). The next one will be larger and hubby is going to build - but it came with a neon orange spray on the wood. So I feel compelled to cover with paint. I have read mixed reviews and wanted opinions on type of paint I should use.

Thank you in advance for all your help and support! I really appreciate it!! If not for the BYC community, two of my barred rocks may not have survived their pasty butts.
