YO GEORGIANS! :)

The breeder where I acquire FBCM raises show-quality birds, and I have FBCM from three of his old lines and last month acquired chicks from his new line as well. (Your chick is from his new line.) Skip and his wife Jennifer probably could cash in on their success if they wanted to do so, but they're not into breeding chickens for the money. They're chicken fanciers and just love breeding birds and the competition of showing chickens, and Jennifer loves to show dogs as well. Skip's selling FBCM pullets right now for $10 each and giving away a cockerel along with a pullet if you want one. Some of the $10 FBCM are four weeks old, so that is quite a deal. (I bought day-olds from his new line for less that $2 apiece last month.) Anyway, Skip will give you chicken fever if you give him half a chance and just a few minutes (if you don't have it already!). lol I have a beautiful FBCM pullet (Cathy) that I acquired from hatching eggs from his earlier lines and hope to show her later this year. She seems to fit the SOP for the breed.

This is an article that was posted in February in the Newnan Times-Herald about the Newnan show, and Skip and Jennifer are featured in the article: http://times-herald.com/news/2017/02/annual-poultry-show-held-at-fairgrounds

Lisa and I have been to their farm a few times, and Skip has an outstanding breeding program in place. He knows what he's doing. If you ever get the chance to go there and see how his pens and brooders are set up and listen to him explain what he does, it's worth the trip and the time. I appreciate that he's generously been willing to help me set up my breeding program as well.

Here's a craigslist ad that Skip is running for FBCM right now:

They are beautiful birds. My limited experience is that for me it's not so much as cashing in as it is about heat checking what the intentions are of the buyer. I sometimes have looked at people and just had my stomach turn as I wondered who I was selling to. Maybe that wears off over time, but I'd truly rather give my birds to someone who will love them than sell them for $3. I know how pampered and loved they are at my house, so it makes it harder for me to do the wondering. The fact that I've been able to become friends with the woman who sold me the crele polish eggs has made me more interested in the birds. I'd rather have the relationships in crazy chicken land than the couple of dollars (if that makes sense). My chicken bestie who wants to breed and grow out while I incubate our birds thinks I need to toughen up!!! :love

I know what you mean. If you set hatching eggs, and have invested time and love into your chicks, it is kind of hard to disassociate those experiences from the person who is acquiring your pets. With cockerels, it's just a hard reality. For example, you can usually safely rehome pullets; however, in general, extra cockerels and roosters get culled. They either get sacrificed early on, go to someone who will eventually eat them or resell them, or end up in your own gumbo pot. I would much rather give extra chicks and/or chickens to someone who I believe will appreciate the birds and will take care of them than to sell them to someone who I'm not sure about.

I love my chickens, yet I TRY not to get too close to the cockerels that I know we will not keep. Still though, chickens have a way of endearing themselves (at least to me), even the cockerels, so dispatching them can be tough sometimes.

It's good that you have a crazy chicken lady to give you advice when needed. :D

Brucifer, I would love one or two of your FBCM pullets! Wish I had known!

You know, Flowerbh, I thought about bringing you a couple of FBCM pullets when we went to the BYC picnic, but I knew we already had the two Speckled Sussex girls for you and that you were in the middle of a major duck hatch, so I chose to leave them at home. However, if we still have the extra FBCM girls when we see you next time, you're welcome to have them.

Obviously you could see my issues with the Bielefelder cockerel I gave @katsdar...we got so attached. I did not see that coming. Minnie is already fitting right in and enjoying herself here. Now that you've armed me with the knowledge that Lisa is down in my neck of the woods so often, I may start begging for another fbcm. And, if you ever find yourself wanting a silly crested bird, I'm here for you. Actually thought of you and the boudin---I have a bunch of jalapeño cheddar venison sausage put up. If we ever manage to catch up again in the near future, I'll have to send you with some.

Brucifer,
I just want to say how much I appreciate your willingness to study, research and share the information that you are constantly putting out here; you're a good man and I'm sure we all are glad you and Lisa are part of "The Georgia Flock."
It was great to spend some time with you folk at the picnic.

Umm, I have to go to Kennesaw June 11th for the dentist. Is that near you?

Oh.......... nope can't do it,
@livhatcher

I think I'm gonna call my Beil, Johnny in remembrance of John Boy, tell the kids the babies are so friendly, I love being able to pick them up and @ShadesofSable the ones I got from you are fitting right in all the babies are. I actually go to sit with the the other night and since this is a 3 day weekend I get to spend more time with them in the yard. Oh look what I have in my carport. A barn swallow?

not a good pic I didn't want to scare her again, but her nest has really grown and I keep out during the day as she gets scared easily but snuck in tonight. Her guy was there during the day

Tabasco Jack, you have some very nice hoop runs. I am thinking about going with those for future expansion instead of more of the the chain-link dog kennels like I've been using. Portability, egg collection, and predator protection are all key considerations. Can you offer any suggestions from your experience with them?

We will put aside another FBCM pullet for you. As for the venison sausage, that sounds wonderful. I haven't tried the jalapeño-cheddar version. I will PM you ahead of time when I know Lisa will be in Macon. Hopefully, it will be very soon.

Awwww shucks! lol Thanks for the kind words, Ron. It was nice meeting you and Shirley, and we enjoyed talking with y'all. We have a great group here, and the BYC picnic was reflection of that. I've learned a lot from many of the folks here and appreciate their generosity.

We're about an hour out from Kennesaw, but we may be able to meet that day. Let me talk to Lisa, and I'll get back with you. What time will you be available?
