As for rabbits, I had a New Zealand White as a pet many years ago, and he grew to be huge. That variety is a possibility as is the Champagne d'Argent. I will have to see what grows fast, provides good meat for smoking, and is available.

Prior to WWII, rabbit was eaten more than chicken in many parts of the world. What's great about rabbit is that the meat is practically all lean protein.

Not going back to rabbits at this time there is only so much my husband can handle. I would.like to.be totally self sufficient. I'm thinning out some of my other chickens in order to have just the Silkies and some layers. I may keep a.couple of broodies for hatching the breeding Silkies. I think if chicks are hatched by good broody mother's the hatch rate is much better my goal is to make a little money on the Silkies There aren't very many shows out this way. I don't.know how well they will do but there also aren't that many quality Silky breeders either.
 
Well what do you know....I got my first white egg from my little Leghorn! She is the only white egg layer I have out of 62 females!!! Can't wait until they get a little larger so I can add them to my color mix. I think it will make the other colors POP!

I thought about pheasant and chukar as well. They both take a lot of room. To me, it didn't look feasible without building larger runs with covers.

And we can talk rabbits while handling all these quail if you want!

We had friends who were supposed to come and watch the eclipse today. They were suppose to bring us some of the special glasses. They decided not to come....and we couldn't find the glasses at such a late date. Anyway, we decided to go to town and pick up some stuff. At lunch we went to the Dawsonville Tavern to eat. They have a nice little patio. The owners of the restaurant had bought several pairs of the glasses and offered his guest the opportunity to see the eclipse.....so we stayed the whole time and got to watch it all! Lots of fun sharing it with strangers and kids and an opportunity of a lifetime. Thanks to the owners of the restaurant!
