YO GEORGIANS! :)

Oh, that sounds a lot easier than pouring a footer. All that cement, Blah! The grass is the other thing I'm worried about. We'll be in the woods. There is no grass, only leaves and pine needles. Can chickens be happy in an environment like that? Here in FL I let my chickens roam outside for an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon. Is that a bad idea in GA? The other thing I am thinking about is maybe buying a tool shed and converting it to a chicken coop and then build a run out from that. In FL we built a house with 3 open sides (just posts with chicken wire on the open sides) I close off the open sides with greenhouse plastic in the winter when we have our 5 days of cold windy weather. I would need something more substantial in GA. Would you know where I could get the most economical shed? I really appreciate the information. Thanks again.

I see a lot of people building sheds out of pallets and you can usually find them free on Craigslist or just by asking. Yeah, I would think it would need to be completely closed up at night, or at least surrounded by a fence with a hot wire to keep varmits from climbing over. If you don't have electricity where you want your coop, you'd have to go with a solar charger, but those are pretty expensive. So the other option is to build it so absolutely nothing can get in. You can also sometimes find free plywood or planks on Craigslist, but you may have to be patient and keep your eyes peeled. Just make sure someone goes with you to the pickup. :)

Oh yeah, I think chickens just love the activity of scratching through stuff. They're very curious. If you've got a lawnmower with a bagger, just run over the pine straw and leaves and start you a big compost pile. Throw food scraps in there and they'll go crazy. Chickens can live in the woods just fine, there's actually probably a lot more bugs under all those leaves and straw. I've found it doesn't take a lot to make chickens happy. :)

@ranchodejo not sure if you transported yet but boxes work fine- the dark is calming. Provide water when you stop every 2-3 hours. My girls fly over the grass to get to the woods. More interesting bugs, I guess. It is just more challenging terrain to keep them safe from predators.
They need a secure (mostly closed in by winter) place for a perch and a hardware cloth run when you can't let them out.
And no matter what they told us in FL, everything grows better in GA. Get inexpensive feed store seed and birdseed and plant for your girls. They'll love having their own garden, even if they do eat things as they sprout.

Not sure if this is the right place but...I have 2 barred rocks (one hen and one rooster) who are around 11 weeks. I would like to give both a new home but mainly the roo. If anyone is interested I live around northwest Georgia
