Thanks! I don't have an incubator so will have to have chicks or older birds.
 
Well I pop in and out of here...Less than usual because of farm demands....We moved around over 40 guineas and 120 young pullets, cokerals and turkey poults this afternoon...Ugh a task more suited for morning but we picked and vegetable gardened for about 6 hours...Now back to the bakery as I have orders for Honey Wheat Bread and Potato rolls I must fill!!! Whew, busy day but grateful for all the business...We have oodles of auctions over on Auction section under chieckens and other poultry.....

Also have decided to sell our RIR flock and our White Leghorn flock, if you know any folks who would like a super duper laying flock of WL and RIR, please send them this way and for those of you who pray and I hope you all Do, please put our family under prayer as I'll be under going some diagnostic surgery next week and would love some positive results! I have a sob story, and a request...

I made a HUGE mistake this season. I purchased young black copper maran pullets from someone I didn't know or have recommendations from. It really wasn't his fault, but we realized after a while that they were sick. We had the poultry lab come out and it turned out they had MG. Did I mention I made a huge mistake? All of our flock was exposed. Our speckled sussex, silver laced wyondottes, black copper marans... all exposed. We had to cull the entire flock of 40 or so birds. To top it off, my last two attempts to hatch shipped eggs yielded one, lonely, lavender orpington chick, who lives inside. I spent more money on eggs... just candled them... and out of 24, only 2 were viable. I am so disgusted. I think the heat here is so high that the poor eggs cook in those USPS trucks.

So, that leaves us at square one, not counting our poor lonely chick! I give up on hatching eggs this season. I just can't keep throwing money away. But, I really want to have another flock up and laying in the spring. I don't want to throw in the towel!!

Do any of you have NPIP, MG negative chicks near Fayetteville? We really want our speckled sussex, lavender orp, silver laced wyondottes, or black copper marans back. If anyone has chicks, or has hatching eggs that I can pre-reserve and get you to hatch for me (since I don't trust myself and can't handle any more disappointment!), can you please send me a message?

No, it's a risk to buy shipped eggs, and I know that. I really think it's the heat. I mean, it's 95+ OUTSIDE those trucks.

I don't want to wait until Spring to buy chicks, I want to have layers in the Spring. *sigh* If I can find some from a safe flock I will drive and get them. Here's hoping!

The thing with ordering eggs is there are so many variables involved. Shipping is a big chance, at best! The shipper can't be held responsible for things that happen at the post office, or how the eggs are treated once they are received. Everyone who orders eggs to be shipped must be aware that all the shipper can do is package the best way they know, and send them in a timely manner. Some people don't realize this. In some cases, a shipper might have eggs to replace those that don't hatch and will send them for the cost of shipping. Not everyone is able or willing to do this. Nor are they obligated to do so.

There really aren't any "bad eggs" when it comes to shipping, unless someone is extremely lazy or negligent when packing. If that's the case, chances are word would get around and that person wouldn't be able to sell anymore. But I'm talking really bad packing, because you never really know what works.


hmlongino, I hate to hear of your misfortune. It's a sad thing to go through. I hope it turns around for you soon. I do applaud you for doing the right thing with your flock. It's a difficult decision to make.


For anyone, it's good to develop a relationship with your state vet early on. It's important to know what is commonly vaccinated for in your area. Always practice good security protocols, and remember, the person you buy from/trade with/get freebies from might not be as aware as they should be. I doubt there are many people out there maliciously passing on sick or carrier birds (maybe, but I'm an optimist) but there are a lot of people who are new and learning, just as you or I.
