YO GEORGIANS! :)

NewChcikenmommy! :

OK, so those of you closer to FL..Now that the weather has figured out what it wants to do (be cold!) How are you keeping your laying hens warm?
I have switched from hay in the coop to pine shavings which I may go make thicker. I have 2 girls that are 9mos old and 3 that are 4mos old so this is their first winter and I will be crushed if they all die..
I am actually temped to bring them into my garage! LOL

should they eat differently through the winter months? I keep seeing mentions of 'hot food' is it actual cooked food or something else?
thanks! that's all for now I think lol

We were at 20 below zero last winter with an uninsulated coop and no electricity to it. Biggest problem was keeping the water open (and warm) and putting vasaline on the combs so they don't get frostbite. We used deep litter method with wood shavings and hay. The four hens did fine and laid eggs almost daily despite the few hours of dayligt we had. I too was worried the first winter, but then I visited the Alaska forum. Makes this area seem downright hot.

Sorry to bust in on your forum, but I was looking for a friend who moved to your area and noted this question.

Just popping in to say... Isn't this weather GREAT?! I am SO not missing the heat! My birds seem to agree! Even the Naked Necks!

The only downside was that the cold came with a good rain... My babies were NOT ready for that! Poor things. They usually stay out in the rain if it's pretty light, so a combination of cold and wet has their young minds befuddled!

Pulling out my warm clothes and flannel sheets! Awwww yeah~

Grandaddy, I do, Presently I have a Pumpkin Hulsey stag, young hen and babies that are about 3 weeks old. PM me on this Board and I'll be delighted to help you

These are Greenfire lines and just beautiful.. I love how well the hens set on eggs....We have 3 stags you can choose from. These birds from our farm are for shows, breeding purposes.

Well, ya'll stay warm. It's cold outside. Going to check and see how the garden fared in this cool weather. Have a blessed, fun day...Nancy
PS check out the auctions....anyone want a bator full of eggs I've got a fillerup special over there!!!

Anyone have any experience with Show Time feeds? They're in Alma. I used to use their gamecock feed but the place I purchased it went out of business. Their crumbles also look pretty good ingredient-wise. Wondering if I need to try to find their products.

Sure is quiet on this thread....

Good Morning Georgia! It is awful quiet on this thread. How is everyone doing on that side of the river??? I am waiting for it to lighten up a little more so I can go out and start taking care of my chickens. Burrrr....

I had 2 OEGB BBReds hatch yesterday that need to go out to the brooder. I have 24 BCMarans eggs in the incubator on about day 5, plus 2 more OEGB BBRed eggs(just can't waste the as they are hatched). Yesterday one of my silkies laid her first egg--not sure who but that egg will go into the bator so I can check fertility. I have 7 marans chicks in the brooder--getting wing and tail feathers. Oh, and my peachick that I think is a male called to my guineas yesterday. That is pretty much it for excitement over here! Oh, and I got cables up in my new Peacock enclosure and some to the netting yesterday--cable is holding the netting up. It is our old hog pen. DH says it is about 20 X 35 -- I need to measure it, but it is going to be a big peacock pen.

Well, the roosters are letting me know it is getting light enough for them so I will talk to you guys later!!

I was just wondering what type of feed you suggest locally. The closest feed stores are mostly smaller feed stores that do not carry the larger major brands such as purina or nutrena. I was talked into buying gamecock feed at the feed store by FRM. I had stocked up on crumbles from the move so I still have some of that left. I will need crumbles because I have 2 little crossbeaks I have to make a mash for everyday and I have a mixed age flock from chicks to hens to roos.
Any suggestions as to what is a better brand to look out for here. Thanks!
