I don't think the moving company moves poultry...not that I would trust them to move our Ladies anyway.... any ideas?

As far as the drive itself for me tomorrow, I'm still torn between I-40, I-10 & 1-20, or I-10 all the way??? Has anyone driven any of these routes/have a preference??

Good luck on the move! Yes, I did the move to GA in October of last year from PA. We had a conversion van and we packed the chickens up in wire dog crates & cages. Before your husband leaves, make sure he cuts up fruits & veggies and bring them along to keep hydrated. I would give mine some each time we had to stop. I also mixed up a jug of vitamin and electrolyte water as a just in case. I moved with 20 some adults and about 10 chicks and the van was packed full of cages. I didn't pack them up to tightly together because I wanted them to have air flow because it was still pretty warm at that time.
About 2 days prior to the big move, I started pumping them up with vitamins & electrolytes and then the night before I gave them a mix of moistened chicken feed to get even more hydration in them.
We had problems with the van along the way and what should have taken 14 to 15 hours with stops, took 23 hours to get here but everyone made it fine. Oh and we left at about 5 am so it was still dark and made it so much easier to grab everyone and get them in the cages.

We have just recently (May) moved to a mini farm in Pike Co. Williamson is our address, just SW of Griffin. The chickens are our first attempt at farm animals, hope to add goats in the spring. But, for now looking forward to some fresh eggs. My chicks are now about 15 weeks, so not expecting anything for a couple of months...or more, from what I've been reading. 4 pullets, 7 cockerels, still mourning that number... But, it is what it is! My brother gave us some killing cones as a 'funny' housewarming gift, but looks like we will be glad we have them.

Looking forward to hearing more about the moving adventure from 'pdx2phx'.

I'm moving to the Brunswick area...found a place that is zoned for chickens, but need to get everything set up before DH can come out with them. He isn't sure we can actually move them because of the transport issues (he has a Chevy Cavalier...not big!!), but we have been through so much with these Ladies I really don't want to have to find other homes for them here. If I had to I could pair down some...but there are a number I simply can't part with!!

Are there any services that (safely, humanely) move critters like these? Do we just have to find a way to do it ourselves with a rental vehicle or something?? Is that totally nuts?

I'm originally from the pacific NW, so am used to green, and now am used to the (dry) heat here in Phoenix, but the heat + humidity combo is a new one!!

Welcome! You're going from a "dry heat" to a wet one! I envy living by the coast. I live on "Sand Mountain" in the very North West tip- but my son lives down your (new) way in Statesboro, going to GA Southern. Next time I go down, I'm stopping a Boggy Bottom Bantams (I think that's what it's called). You'll be close to them, and I heard that they have great stock. Welcome! _Pam Pittman

anyone know the breeds or genders of these chickens? they r either FCMs, Olive eggers, or ameraucanas. i hatched them myself in a homemade incubator in my room, but i dont know their breeds or genders.


and this is may 3 month old mallard. is it a boy or a girl?

first one looks like a Marans, second has a beard and a pea comb, but the black copper coloring, so an OE, both pullets. I think your mallard is also a hen, I forget when the adult feathers start coming in, I think 3-4 months. If it was a drake, the green feathers will start coming in on the head.
