also, expect a chick to die. it will happen usually. dont name them until they are almost ready to get out of the brooder. saves the tears. if you order from a good hatchery, they will send about 3 of the breed that you ordered most of. these are called filler chicks, and are sent because the hatchery expects some to die. not because they are a bad hatchery, but because chicks die. just like that.

I actually had 56/56 survive to 8 weeks on non-medicated starter. Had a few runts and slow-to-feather but otherwise did OK with supplemental yogurt and small amount of vitamin/electrolyte in the water. I admit I gave them sort of a lot of attention.

I notice that my current small group is feathering out faster than this summer's brooder chicks. They're with mom in an outdoor cage and have periodic exposure to 30-50 degree temps when they're not under Mom's warm feathers.

I don't really name chickens unless they are adult roosters which tend to have unique personalities. Sometimes I name groups of chickens that tend to socialize or roost together.

Also hatcheries include any number of extra chicks (mostly roos) in an order to keep everyone warm during transport with body heat. Not because they expect that chicks will die. It is to prevent deaths, not to compensate for them. And sometimes they include a lot more than three extra.

Ok...so on here I read that you can't give yogurt until they are a week old....but I also read somewhere else that yogurt can be given in the first couple of days. Also....someone said that yogurt should be given if using "Non-Medicated" starter.....but I am using Medicated starter. So is giving them yogurt still okay? I had planned on mixing a bit of Greek Yogurt in their water when they arrive { I get them at a day old} so is this good or bad?? Any info would be great!!

My babys are not on medicated food my little bit had issue with pasty butt when I got her and she was a fresh hatch my rat was on antibotic and had to have yogart while taking her meds so i put little bit on yogart and yes it was the strawberry one her pasty but clearned up and the girls get there treat every night they look forward to it i give them the fuite yougart and they love it and the love finding the chucks of fruit and playign keep away with it. the only one theat scared me was the blue berry one cuz the berrys where so big. so far my girls are doign going they are going 4 week and 1 at 3 weeks just moved out side they have apple cider vinager in water they get 12 grain wheat bread in am for treat and there yogart at night.

every one has an opion and I dont think there is a right or wrong way its what you feel best. i have learned alot from this sit and also my local feed store (she wont sell baby chicks as people dont do there reseach before they get them and she will not send a chick to there death so she only sells teenage chiks) some one posted your chicks will die from what I learned is some sad cases yes but in most human error plays a roll

we got our ducklings on the same day as yours.

this looks a lot like one of my 3 ducks( butter-finger,and muffin are boys and 1 girl twix is the 1 who looks like the one above.

what breed of chickens did you get? or are you still waiting?

I just gave my girls some yogurt and they loved it! It took a bit for them to discover that it was good, but then they couldn't get enough! How often can you feed it to them? Mine are still pretty young: 4-5 weeks.

Oh, my chickies LOOOOVE yogurt! I haven't tried it with the new ones yet - so I am glad I saw this thread, it reminded me I will get some tomorrow at the store. At my little local grocery store they usually have huge containers of 'reduced for quick sale' plain dannon yogurt. That is what I usually get. It would be too much for me to finish by the expiration date, but the chickies eat it all within two days. They love it, and it is so good for them!

I feed medicated chick feed and wait til they are "up and going good" before feeding them anything else. Usually about 2 weeks and often feed them yogurt. I like it so I often buy to much and it starts getting old-then its chicken food. I also put a little ACV in chick water. my experience is that it really makes a difference with pasty butt.
