You have got to be kidding me!!

I hope that this does not comes as too much of a suprise to anyone here, but most issues like this are decided by Judges and courts by using some plain common sense. It must be obvious to almost everyone by now that the store employees did not use good common sense in this instance. It has to be really obvious that the police who responded had to be as dumb as stones and had no common sense whatsoever. The store executives realized what happened and said "OH MY GOD, WHAT HAVE WE DONE" and quickly had their common sense buttons pushed and they apologised and exclaimed that these people did nothing wrong. The prosecutors, who rarely use common sense, even they said, "NO LAWS WERE BROKEN< NO CASE HERE." The only thing left in this matter is to see how much these innocent people will get in monetary compensation.

If you think that you are using common sense when you exclaim that people should not eat stuff in a grocery store and compare it to opening up sealed cans of food, then I must say (Terri made me do this) that I respect your opinions and sincerely hope you are never selcted for a jury trial. If you think it is using good common sense to compare this incident with someone coming onto your own private property and taking your chicken eggs, then again, I respect your opinion and hope that you also are never selcted for a jury trial. To my knowledge no major grocery store in the country (and that includes Safeway) has any policy to prohibit or even discourage people from eating their prepared foods in the store and I say if that type of behaviour offends you, then you should refrain from doing so but to condemn these people for doing so is just something that I will not put into words.

Someone here said that it was too bad that there is no thingy that would determine if these people intended to steal this food. I say to you that there is a thingy, and it is the use of some good common sense.

And just to end my rant this story has gotten so preposterous that even the NY Post, a newspaper that has to be the most conservative in the US reported this story in their "Too Wierd to Believe" column.

I agree! I don't condone stealing but I would think I could use the good common sense that God gave me to not call out the vice squad and send an innocent child home with a stranger over a few chicken sandwiches. Apparently the people in authority regarding this case have agreed.

I was wondering when someone would get around to blaming the police officers outright.

Law enforcement officers don't make the laws, they only enforce them.

Which is why I question the store for holding them for 4 hours while they waited for law enforcement to arrive without using their heads.

I can not BELIEVE how thoughtless people can be!

I mean REALLY!?!? It was a SANDWICH!!!!!!! I can totally understand making them pay for them. I can understand that they might have to deal with a little inconvenience in the process. I mean even if it was absent minded, they did steal. But taking the child OVER NIGHT! That's just wrong!

This is embarrassing to post this so here it goes. Safeway's store policy is if an item leaves the store without being paid for it can not be bought. Since they left with the wrapper out of the store the sandwich can no longer be bought. If I eat something and can not pay for it that is called theft. Now that everyone is here and knows how the big world works you will no longer get in trouble with Safeway if you remember to pay for the items before leaving. Safeway followed protocol on shop lifters and called the cops. The cops arrested them and took them to jail. Child services has to come down and take the child if both parents are arrested while with a child. So if you are defending her your arguments are invalid.

Well then Safeway disagrees with you because they apologized and didn't file charges. If they don't want people eating and honestly forgetting to pay then they shouldn't allow eating in the first place.

Trust me. They are trying to avoid a lawsuit or lost sales. They just want it to go away and if they have to back-peddle on their own policies they will. They will probably also throw their manager under the bus to do it, too. What we were told to do policy wise went right out the window in certain situations. It is a no win for the employees who are doing what they are taught to do. If they didn't do it they would be in just as much hot water.

I have seen it over and over. Even people with a history of theft just need to whimper about a lawsuit or bad publicity and they will usually back off.
