You know you love your chickens when...

You have one feeling ill, and you run all over town buying supplies and treats just hoping it gets better. She is better!
I just did that 2 days ago, lol! I feared cocci and ran all over town getting Corid for now and immune boosters, chickie vits and kale for after, lol! I'm glad to hear she's better!

You return from 2 weeks abroad and when the car pulls up to the house, you go straight to the backyard to see your flock, and it takes you 10 minutes to return to the house because you are so happy to be greeted by the girls that come running when they see you...

Thanks coo de grass, we were devastated by the loss of our BO. Then it turned to fear that they may all get sick. The Americana was her best friend, she is fine now. I know what you mean about them running to come see you, I love it. I never knew chickens could be such GREAT pets. I love them, wish I had some LONG ago. Glad your flock were still heathy and happy when you returned.

Thanks, @No roo ! We did lose 1 chick who was part of the great chick escape caper. They decided to try something that no other chick has done before... they got underneath the coop through a 2 inch gap and a couple got into the woods. Our wonderful neighbors were out there in the dark, rolling around in chicken muck trying to get the ones that were still under the coop... I have some amazing neighbors! Turns out that 1 escapee is still on the lam, tho I think it may have met with a predator... Other than that, the only other adventure was an EE hen who decided to fly over the gate... and then flew back in after they gave up chasing her so they could get to work. Next morning, there she was with the rest of the flock.

I saw her do that this morning! I was sitting right there with a cup of coffee and she flew out. Trying to get into the garden where she had laid a few of her eggs. Then she came over and complained to me that she couldn't get into the garden. I got her back into the run, but she flew out again, so I gave up and left her alone. She went back on her own!

Can't figure out if I should increase the height of the gate, clip her wings, or just let her go back and forth!

My vhicken house (or as friends call it, chicken mansion) is safe with buried hardware cloth all around it. The attached run I had been done the same, it is covered. If they are in there, they are safe. However, I let them out from morning to dusk to free range. They come when I call them, go straight into the run. They are a joy for my family.

I am not a fan of the clipping of wings, I would want them to be able to escape a predator if the need arose. After all that was how the Lord intended them to be. Also I understand your concern.

My flock just love the garden, especially the fresh vegetables that I feed them, they eat like they haven't had food for days. Love cucumbers and the apples fallen from my trees.

We have always had a hard time keeping chickens in the past, but had no special chicken domain until I got these. They just free ranged 24/7. That never worked out, they always eventually fell pray, probably to the Bobcats. This seems to be doing well forthem. They are ready to go in before dark. I have the outside set up with motion lights as well as pathway lights around the perimeter, at dusk I close up the chicken house for the night. If something did manage to get into the run (not likely) they can not get inside to get my girls.

I had some treats for them yesterday, could not locate one, searched high and low, started to get really concerned for her, then found her under one of my shrubs dusting. I was scared something had happened to her up until then. Funny how they are almost like children.

Sounds like you have you some very wonderful neighbors. You are lucky to have them.

When you spend a whole week trying to convince yourself your cockerel is still a puller even though you hear that nasty crowing because you really don't want to part with them. (Dumb city rules ahhh!!)

. Hahaha, I have a pullet that I so wanted to be a rooster, but alas, he laid an egg (silkie). So cute, still my favorite (don't tell the others).
