You mean, not everyone takes their ducks camping?

Do you think chickens could go camping too? My parents would hate it if I brought them along:oops:

First off, leave your folks at the house if they have an issue with sharing the campfire with feathered friends ...

Secondly, I think camping with chickens depends on the breed...

Never bring a Leghorn on any kind of road trip, unless you just like talking to law enforcement....

Wyandotte in the car... no thanks, I gotta stay home and pull weeds...

If Cochins or Faverolles want to go camping, and the ducks have a pool party on the calendar so they can’t come... I’d still go but I don’t expect wagon rides and free for all splash-athons in the lake... but still it’s better than a weekend of Barney Miller reruns...

But if you want to get crazy, load up some Easter Eggers in an RV and head out of town... those mixed up hens always know how to have a good time!

Chuck and Buck may or may not love a good Easter Egg Hunt....

So my duck-sitter bailed a day before our camping trip. My oldest son was supposed to watch our boys while we took the RV out for a few days with my youngest two kids. We had no options except bring the boys or cancel the trip.

So we loaded the ducks up and went camping.

Camping? With ducks? They behaved better than the kids! There was a water spigot at our camp site and someone had left a hose. We hooked it up and turned it on low. Mud! Bugs! Water! Fun! They didn't even need to be penned up. As long as someone was around they were content on being real ducks.

Then we took them to the lake. Mind you, our pansy ducks have never been interested in the lake.. it's not warm, clear water that they've become accustomed to like at home. They ran at the sight of a small wave lapping at the shore. We had enough and forced one in.... and then the next. They had a blast! They swam around "Daddy" (my son), diving down and popping back up for what seemed like forever. When it was time to go, my son would put one up on shore but as soon as he turned for our other one, he would run back in the water. We laughed so hard watching my kid try to wrangle the clowns back to the truck.

And every night they would run to the red wagon to go for a walk. Let me rephrase that.... every night they would run to the red wagon and go for a ride around the campgrounds. They were thrilled just to be pulled around looking at so much cool stuff and meeting people because let's be real, a boy pulling a wagon of ducks through a campground is kind of a conversation starter.

At night they were tucked away inside the RV for bedtime. I was pretty stressed about taking two ducks camping but I don't think we will ever go without them again!
That's a riot!!! Except for the leash law for pets, I'd be all for it!! Lucky Ducks!

Yeah.... campsite had a "leash law" but let's be real.... who puts their ducks on a leash? (But then again, who takes ducks camping?)

Thankfully the place wasn't crowded at all and even the rangers stopped to say hi to them. They stayed on our campsite and didn't bother anyone. We brought their outdoor pen just in case and I figured if they were going to be heathens we could corral them. The only time it go used was at night time inside the RV in the kids' room.

My son is 11. Chuck and Buck are his babies he got for Christmas. They do everything with him. They're very socialized. Going "bye bye" is one of their favorite things. They ride in the car in a seat belted laundry basket. Chuck likes to be the navigator, quacking towards the windshield like he knows where he's going while Buck is just content looking at the people in the passing cars. Their favorite place to go is Petco and you can't go there without cruising the back wall with the fish tanks. When they ride in the cart, Chuck and Buck are at perfect height to look at all the fish.

We are a strange family but we own it.... and have fun with it.
I love everything about this thread! Great stories and what a fantastic way to grow up!

I regularly have a serama or 2 in my jeep. And I have one who's so sure he's a person that he won't associate with other birds, so he even sleeps by my bed.

That first part seems practical... maybe not normal... but practical.

I keep all kinds of random stuff in my truck for "just in case"... I can think of a few times that a couple of tiny chickens would have come in handy.

A tiny chicken by the side of the bed though?... you might just be pushing into crazy chicken person territory there... you've been warned! :p
