I understand they are, although I have handled many of them and never had any problems with it. They are the funniest fish to catch, you can hear them huffing to inflate themselves, and when you throw them back in they almost instantly release the air and go back to a normal fish. Not something I would eat.

I googled fugu and found in an article written in May 2012, 23 people had died since 2000 in Japan. That’s almost 2 per year. Good lord, that’s awful.
