Some do; some don't, here. That one is a particularly healthy specimen. It seems they pop up anywhere the ground has been disturbed. It's a biennial, so the first year they're not so noticeable. Second year they're the healthiest. After that they seem to go downhill--fewer leaves, fewer stalks, smaller. They are considered an invasive species here, but I really like them.
 
When you're using cornmeal from the store shelf, you kinda *need* a little sugar to mask the fact that it's gone rancid. I don't splurge on a lot of health foods, but I don't use Walmart cornmeal. I get the fresh, expensive stuff and I keep it in a vacuum sealed bag in the deep freeze. Ideally I'd grind it myself, but it's too many carbs--not worth buying a mill. I hardly ever eat it. 🤷‍♀️
