Oh my! You all make me feel so much better about myself because now I know I'm not alone!!!
It started innocently enough. My baby chicks came before we built our coop, so when we finally finished the coop and put the birds in it, I would carry each of them (33 at that time) from the coop to the backyard, and then from the backyard to the coop at night. The neighbors began to express their concern for me, and informed me that "chickens can walk." I don't remember how long that went on, but the chickens eventually learned how to get back to their coop at night without my help.
It wasn't long before some of them started riding around in my truck with me; it seemed normal to me. Then, as they matured, I realized my rooster to hen ratio was imbalanced and for the sake of my hens I needed to thin the rooster population down. Of course, I couldn't butcher them and I couldn't sell or give them to someone else who would butcher them; instead, I converted my dog kennel and run into a "bachelor pad" for some of my extra roosters. Moreover, instead of shrinking, our flock grew to accommodate my husband's games and a flock of guineas.
Anyway, I have ended up with 6 house-chickens, mostly due to injuries and illness. I've learned what chicken diapers are (it gives the neighbors something new to talk about). It's time consuming cleaning up after them in addition to my other pets, and even though some of the injuries have healed, they'll probably be in the house for awhile to come. They go outside on nice days and they always come to the door of their new coop (my house) at night.
