It was designed to maintain the breed as it should be, Breeding to improve means when you get good stock but it lacks some traits to which it needs and then trying to breed in that direction to impart those traits back into the line. Without a standard to go by there would be Anarchy LOL.

I agree, the key word is "Maintain" but i see breeders that may have some of the best lines that are still "improving".

LOL No not Hulk in particular. I simply remembered a conversation from way back as being the only example I'd ever read of what the article was charging, even though it had nothing to do with egg laying. The thought of accusing you of breeding foo foo chickens just cracks me up

True......... very true. I find myself doing the same thing.

I have always wondered why good examples of a hens eggs cant be shown with her in a seperate class..showing eggs in UK an Europe has always beena big deal..the show rooms are packed with eggs to be judged...this was a big cry in australia that the world record egg laying australorps were being turned into a show ring fad they lost a lot of the ability to set down that many eggs a year and are now average egg layers..the record egg layers were bought up by somone with deep pockets in the US and later dissappeared when america went out to work for corporations.. many breeders in australia were upset that this wasnt handled in a better way..

Just because the Standard was written that long ago doesn't mean any existed that met that standard of perfection then or now. When you realize just how relatively few breeders even bother for any given breed, then you can more easily see how things are in their current state.

, Although I won't admit it I did breed them years ago when I attempted to get my DW into chickens, it was futile at best. she now just helps me with the real chickens LOL.

To me , breeding to the SOP is a guide. Hatch a hundred chicks and look at the variation between them. Huge. Yet same parents. THis is genetic; each bird a little different than the next. THe population will migrate based on natural pressures if there is no selection pressure to keep the traits of the SOP by the breeders. Not every birds will look like the SOP. It is a goal.

A truly good breeder selects for utility traits and SOP. But, I think some bird fanciers have chosen to only breed for the SOP. ANd forgotten egg production, thrift, disease resistance, or feed conversion, etc. I think this was the OP's point.

Yes, I agree that this is the OP's point. Only trouble is, where are examples of this? Aveca did provide one, the australorp. I'd never read that about the Australorp before, so now I see at least one example. I think too often it's just a blanket accusation that may have little root in fact and makes it seem that all "pure" breeds are nothing more than a pretty bird. This isn't always the case though. It's misleading.
