I have a young hen..has a egg flopping out side of her vent...actually it looks like she doesnt have a hole...I can see her poop hole but the egg is like stuck behind the skin....What do I do?

I see alot of info on how to fix this after she passes the egg, but the egg is still in there but is hanging outside the body cavity...how do i get it out...I dont want to break the egg and cause more problems...

OH boy...that I can't help with...sorry

but I wanted to give you a bump. How is she doing now? I wonder if you try giving her a warm bath? Maybe that will help her pass it? Are you sure it's an egg? Can you take a picture?

maybe try feeding her olive oil soaked bread..and maybe go ahead and 'lube' up the vent with olive oil as well, to help it slide out if needed.

hope everything comes out good, keep us updated

HELPING A EGG BOUND PULLET
Glenda L Heywood

I was emailed this thought on helping an egg bound pullet to which I added also some help

Fancier emailed this:
I have not LOST pullets to eggbound lately.Neil Mahaffey told me how to
save them.Hold them and gently squeze till you can see the egg shell.take a
shringe and gently pierce the shell and slowly drain
the yoke.The shell will
remove fairly easy after the presure is relieved.I removed one this afternoon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GLH REPLIED
Yes Neil is correct on proceedure only thing to this,
IS to please put some OLIVE OILl or
some kind of oil in with eye dropper first.
putting eye dropper on each side of vent before pushing egg in to sight.

Also I used a eye drooper and filled with oil and inserted it to the left of the vent and squeezed the oil into the bird. Then take a dropper full of oil and insert to right of vent and squeeze oil in.

And try to bring the fingers up under the egg and not to squeeze the birds tender sides.
you can break the bones in the vent doing this.

Also when the but end of the egg appears just take a
large darning needle and poke secveral holes in the end of the egg and smush easy like on the side of the egg and remove the white and yold
or use the syringe to suck the yolk and white out

and wipe with a a paper towel. now take a large twizers and pull gently the whole egg shell out.
DO NOT leave any egg shell in the vent

then put some kind of oil in vent again for healing this bird needs literal oil with eye dropper put in the vent

OK, Here's the update...

The hen is fine and doing very well....

This was unusual egg bound situation..The hen had pushed the egg out of the body cavity, and I could not find the vent exit, I could see the exit where she poops but the egg just hung there in the vent sack on the outside. I was 100% sure it was an egg cause i could hold it on the outside of her body but it was in a sack. I cleaned the area very well and used warm water, and tried pushing the egg back in the cavity which i was successful in doing but she would just push the egg back out. I know this was causing alot of stress on her and was causing alot of stress on me. I had my son helping me by covering her eyes which helped her calm down.

What I ended up doing, which at this point i was just trying to do everything I could to save her. With the egg on the outside I found a Very thin spot on the sack and with some small shard scissors(After cleaning with Alcohol) made a small incision where there was not any veins or blood vessels and removed the egg. I then massaged the uterus or vent back in and soaked the area with warm water, amazingly everything went back inside and I watch for the next couple of days and everything is back to normal, now.....I have found several small brown eggs in the nesting boxes sine then. I was sure she was not going to make it but she is acting like nothing has happened...I wonder also if she had a vent that was closed and by me making a hole she is now passing the eggs...I don't know..
What I do know is this is a miracle that she is still alive after reading some of the stories. My 4 children have been so concerned for her and i would not doubt that are saying there personal prayers for "Lucky". I thought for sure I would see the same thing everyday from her and I know that if it happened again I would have to cull her.
Anyways thanks For all your advice, I called a Vet and she said she has only had to deal with egg bound in the vent and cant exit, but had never heard of one hanging in the vent sack on the outside. I wish I would have taken some pictures but in the stress of it all I didn't even think of it...

eggs and poop come out of the same opening (two different tracks lead to one exit, separated by a kind of "flap"). So, if she can poop, she can lay eggs. It sounds to me like the flap between the two tracks got stuck closed so the egg couldn't exit somehow. Maybe it was a weird muscle spasm or something. Anyway... again... the vent is the exit for both poop and eggs, so it sounds like she just had one bad incident and hopefully everything is fine now.

I think it's amazing and brave that you performed this mini-surgery and I'm so glad you thought of it and it worked for you! Congratulations
