Your Antibiotic of Choice

Here are the results from a necropsy I had done on two ducklings. Both E. Coli and Pseudomonas were found.

I see that only two of the antibiotics tested in your report would work on both of the bacteria. Would your E-Coli and Pseudomonas be the same as mine? or would they be different strains and different antibiotics would have to be used?

As I understand it, bacteria like E. coli and Pseudomonas come in different strains, so what works for one might not work for the other. I have another report from the first turkey poult I lost and two peachicks, I'll see if I can find them.

Ok, I compared the tested antibiotics from my report to yours. In mine the four antibiotics that both the E-Coli and Pseudomonas were sensitive to were;
Enrofloxacin
Gentamicin
Neomycin
Streptomycin

In your report the two antibiotics that were listed as sensitive to both bacteria were;
Enrofloxacin
Gentamicin

However Neomycin and Spectinomycin were listed as sensitive to one and intermediate to the other. So I guess that we did have slightly different strains or the testing was done a bit differently.

We buy generic 10% injectable Baytril (100mg/ml). Our 100ml bottle was about $35, which is cheap. No prescription required. What we bought is the generic version of "Baytril 100".

Here are a couple of searches I did on both Enrofloxacin and Gentamicin.

I did not now that Enrofloxacin had a generic of Baytril and is sold on line at a number of pet med outlets.

Yes, enrofloxacin is the generic "name" of the medicine, Baytril is a brand name... like "Augmentin" is a brand name for amoxicillin plus clavulante...

The info I looked up on Gentamicin was pretty scary -- @casportpony , what do you know about it? It sounded like really serious side effects might be an issue?
