Your Chicken's 1st Experience with Snow!!!

I went out to do chores tonight & one of my OEGB hens had refused to go back across the chicken run to the girls goat barn to roost where she normally roosts at night. She put herself to bed in with the Silkcos in their cage......go figure? She obviously didn't like the snow!

LOL - they're so silly.

We had snow with the chooks last year, I remember the first morning I opened the door, the ones right in front stopped DEAD in their tracks, the ones at the back pushing and shovin, wondering what the hold up was, finally one of the bantams at the back flew over, and did what all chickens do it seems, flew out, made a circle in the air and barely made it back to the safety of the coop without having to touch down.

In a few hours they're all out eating it!

I have snow-aphobic chickens. They refuse to come out of the barn when there's snow outside. They'll walk as far as the roof covers (which is about a foot) then they'll turn around and go back in. Doesn't matter if I have treats or not.

They're nutters!

Well! It's been confirmed! They hate snow! We got about 6 inches yesterday in our lovely MI mini blizzard & I shoveled paths for them this morning in the run. They won't even go out on the shoveled paths!

The big ISA hens won't either! UGH!

We had an old white Leghorn that we bought as an adult. The chickens were huddled in the doorway refusing to come outside in the snow. She worked up her courage and flew all the way to our porch. It was over forty feet and the old dear made it. She spent the day on the porch and I carried her back to the coop that evening.
