Your experiences..... (coons)

sorry but got to disagree with you, trapping is way harder then hunting and shooting, also may i ask what foot hold trap your dog was caught in? as a trapper i have been caught in number 3 coyote traps (more then once i suck at setting them lol) and it don't hurt.

to the OP,

what type of trap you running? coil spring, long spring or dog proof.
i like using duke dog proof traps and have a decent catches on them.
but the biggest tip for anyone trying to trap is set on sign, best thing to learn is find the coon trail, set the trap close or on the trail, with bait you should catch it.

I'm not a trapper, so I don't know the kind, but it was metal without claws. The neighbor who set it without our knowledge on the property behind my folks' house was probably after red foxes. He also wasn't checking his lines daily or keeping track of his traps. This one had been out there a long time and he'd forgotten about it. If my dog hadn't pulled the 2 foot stake out of the ground and dragged it home, we might not have found her for a long time. The traps probably hurt less if you don't panic and pull on them. Also if you can release it and get it off yourself quickly instead of having your foot smashed in an unnatural position for hours. We ended up with an expensive vet bill and she wouldn't walk on that foot for a week and a half. I'm sure paw traps have their uses and most trappers are responsible with them... I'm just not a fan.

This is the type of traps I have used in the past. I have different sizes. More people are selling their land and new people are building homes and moving in so I'm seeing more domestic critters (dogs and cats). Now I've been using live traps. We also live on a dead end road and we seem to get other people's relocations. I have caught some cats in my live traps. They appeared to be feral. They acted like they wanted to kill me when I was releasing them but they took off as soon as I opened the trap. I know this isn't a coon.

It’s a few days ago we were in a feed store and subject of catching coons came up. I had heard about the traps that they just catch a foot but had never seen any except the regular steel traps. We got one of the foot traps and I set it by a gate going down to the garden. One of the men at the feed store said just put a few pieces of dog food down in it and maybe a few on the ground around it. The next day when checking it. It had been tripped and pulled under the gate and whatever was caught had wallowed the area and scratched up some honey suckle bushes close by. That trap took quite a bit of strength to set so I can’t hardly believe a critter could get out of it but it did somehow. I wondered afterwards if a coyote could have pulled the animal out of it, but didn’t see any signs of blood or fur.

I've always used live traps[i have barn cats] sometimes i have a coon the same night, longest wait was a week. if you don't have any cats or dogs you might try a small dab of wet cat food as bait. seafood or tuna is the most popular with the coons here
We used cat food in a live trap and caught a raccoon one night. Set the trap again the next night, same bait .... caught a bloomin' skunk. Stick with marshmallows!
