I seem to be one of the few British people on this forum - we go to the south of France 2 weeks today - I can't wait. We have friends coming to house and animal sit for us. they will look after the horse, ducks, chickens and pet rats. The dogs will go to a friend. That means my husband and 2 girls and I will have a relaxing 2 weeks in the sun. The girls are 16 and 18 and quite civilised - it is going to be lovely. I will miss the animals but is nice sometimes to hand over the responsibility!!

We usually go visit my family in WV, but with gas and all the other stuff we have going on we canceled this year. Taking DD to a precollege program in MD. My nephew and his new wife from WV are coming to visit for a week. Then my DH's aunt from South America is coming for a visit. After that we are building a coop and run, cleaning out closets and drawers, putting 100's of fotos into albums finally, and having summer camp in the backyard for our boys. Also planning my lessons for next school year. Maybe do a little painting.

We're planning mini vacations at home. Camping in the back yard. Themed weeks. Our schedule is different, we work alot on the weekend, and have free time middle of the week. So the free time will be when we do our themed things. We'll plan our food and activities around the home based on the themes. At first I thought it'd be extra work and planning on my part, but no more than planning and packing for a vacation for my family. Even easier now that I think about it! The whole family is looking forward to the different themes, and will hopefully keep them excited the whole summer long. Plus it's much cheaper than going on vacation which is out of the question for us this year. The only traveling we'll be doing will be to local places (parks/beaches etc) A cookout/picnic at a beach or park is always fun and relaxing. We don't have to travel far, and it still seems like we're far away from home.

One cheap trick that we do for our big family to save on a summer splurge.... ice cream. Normally we stop at an ice cream place once a week (sometimes more). It can get pricey w/ a family of 7. So now I just run into the grocery store and buy a pack of popsicles/fudgecicles/mini ice cream cups or whatever. $3 instead of $30. We stop at a park or beach on the way home to eat them! Plus then the kids can burn their sugar buzz off before heading home!

After driving truck over the road and locally all these centurys,I just want to stay at home and eat in my kitchen or on my grill....everyone else wants to drive and travel and eat out,but thats all I've done for so long..plus the birds and my cat miss me,I think. My vacations at home.

Mark us crazy because we are still keeping our 3 week vacation in August back East with our kids and two of their friends. We are going to Philadelphia, Washington DC, Hershey, Gettysburg, Cedar Point Ohio (my hometown area), Atlantic City and NYC - roadtrip, of course, after landing in Philly. We bought Yankee tickets and Broadway show tickets last winter and honestly, I've been waiting to take the kids on this trip for years so I'm not changing my plans. We'll probably only be able to afford to eat recipes I can make with our eggs for the rest of the year, lol but it will be worth it...I hope.

Those all sound like wonderful ideas. I like the theme weeks and the ice cream at the beach. The East coast trip would be so nice. I'm from there and it's a differenet world. I love the old buildings.

I guess one road trip I'm taking is to Klamath Falls here in Oregon next month for a wedding. It's only a weekend, but still it's nice to get out of the house and the reception is going to be more like a family reunion/bbq type of thing.
