Zane Made REAL Progress (New Pics Pg 99)!RIP Lorelei...

I was eager to try the oil thing when I got home from work. Had olive oil on hand (will get wheatgerm oil as soon as I can find it) and put some on a small amount of multigrain bread and Annie nearly took my arm off she was so enthusiastic! Even refined gentlemanly BJ roo got pretty psyched and clearly enjoyed his share. Annie preened me for awhile afterward

Well, I didnt see wheatgerm oil in the store today, but I did get some untoasted wheatgerm and added it to their oatmeal and extra virgin olive oil today. Again, bright red combs and faces. I fear, though, that it may be too late for Lorelei. I'm not at all sure that her problem is the same as Ruby and Rosemary's. She is still emaciated and off color-purplish, very weak. Tomorrow, I'm bringing her in the house to make her stop running all over the place. She is using up every calorie she is eating by ranging everywhere. I want her to rest for a day or two so at least whatever I manage to get her to eat will stay with her, poor sweet girl.
Ruby on the other hand, took her high place back on the roost tonight for the first time in a week! She seems on the mend now just like Rosemary.

Sure didn't expect those results from olive oil though! Kitty, that's wonderful about your shells on the eggs. I didn't see that at first read, but that is so awesome! I hope I did stumble on something beneficial in several ways for our girls.

I was just wondering if you have treated lately for cocci, even if there is no blood in feces, there could be a problem? Just curious.

Any word from Dr. Peter Brown?

I'm so sorry about Lorelei. It's so confounding and heartbreaking all at the same time. Heart? Cancer? Something less dire? Hoping some rest will help strengthen her and keep some calories on board. Maybe a combo of rest and a little exploration will sit well with her.

(A tangent, not suggesting it would be anything other than a long shot in this case, but our feathered friends presenting with what appear to be weakened systems brings this to mind.....I've been thinking about the immune systems of chickens, the cancers, all the dreaded problems humans have bred into them. Have also long been researching the wonders of mangosteen fruit for humans and furry kids - seems to be pretty amazing stuff, even with cancer. I've been wondering about mangosteen and birds and whether they might benefit from it. I haven't stumbled on the actual fruit - only the juice - but it could be drizzled on a raspberry or blackberry or piece of watermelon ..a little mangosteen reportedly goes a long way... )

Judy, I've never heard of that fruit. Probably couldnt find it where I live, but if I see some, I'll get it. You just never know what may help. It does seem that Lorelei has a different situation than the Rhode Isl Red ladies did. Hers began much earlier and while they have seemingly recovered for the most part, she is still declining. After her bout with something similar last summer, it could be just that whatever has been stalking her is catching up to her rapidly. If she is alive in the morning, I'm bringing her inside to make sure she is resting all day tomorrow and eating, too.

* I used to buy quarts of wheat germ oil from the horsey section of the feed store for my bunnies in Cali. It has a lot of vit. e in it, which is a pretty active blood thinner, so think I'd stick with olive for suspected cocci or any birds with bleeds from wounds. Just a thought. . . Mangosteen juice can be had from the Costco.

cyn...when was the last time you wormed your birds and with what? Now you may not have thought of this but once a year I "double" worm my birds (meaning ten days apart)... you might want a think on that for your sick birdie.
