Zane Made REAL Progress (New Pics Pg 99)!RIP Lorelei...

This does sound good, Cyn! My fingers are still crossed and I am still praying. It does sound like you are getting these girls turned around though! Olive oil!

How's that egg coming along? I know, wrong post. I just thought while I had you here I would ask!

S.C. I have read about the Egg Drop Syndrome and although the symptoms are really close to what is going on, it seems to be something closely connected to waterfowl, which I dont have. The egg descriptions are right-on, however. That article seems to imply that the hens themselves are not feeling particularly bad, though, and mine certainly are. The fact that they are doing better after the molasses and then the dosing with oil is interesting to me. I dont keep out grit because we have a gravel driveway and lots of rock here, so not sure if they would have gorged. Hard to say what those girls got themselves into! I appreciate all the help and concern from my BYC family for my girls and Zaners. I sure would be happy if the girls could get back to normal and I could concentrate on just my Zane for awhile. Things piling up can really bring on the headaches! Hugs to all my wonderful friends! You are very much appreciated!

Well, I for one am going to WalMart and pick up a large bottle of olive oil just for my chickens!! I always keep it for cooking but didn't know to give it to the birds. I will do up some olive oil/buttermilk/bread as a reg. treat from now on! this is a learning lesson for all of us. I can't tell you how great this all is Cyn!! Just the fact that your girls are eating and looking a tad better is a tremendous improvement!!

Carrie, I keep some extra virgin Olive Oil here just for cooking and I know it's very nutritious oil, but I think even just veg oil would do in a pinch. It was very interesting that when Ruby was eating that oily, milky cornbread, the milk would pool with little oily puddles in it and she'd slurp up that oily milk like she really knew she needed it. So, it may not be a miracle cure, but in this case, it could very well, at least in part, be somewhat a case of sour crop, if not impacted crop. She is still weak, but so much more alive-looking today than the last few days.
Stacey, sorry, I missed your question about the lone egg in the bator. It's still moving and squirming, but making me wait. I have a name in mind for that baby, but I really hope it's a pullet. Not sure I have a place here for a bearded Barred Rock rooster, LOL.

Thanks Cyn, I have some Canola oil that I keep for certain things. I also have some buttermilk in the fridge.

I will give them some as a treat tonight as a preventative. We all are learning from your trials. I don't see that it would hurt anything.

I think the acidity in the buttermilk is good for them, in general. I do dose them with buttermilk and pumpkin seeds as a natural worm preventative on occasion. The main reason I wet the cornbread in milk is so it would go down easier, LOL. Ever try to eat cornbread dry with nothing to drink? Sure didn't want them choking when I was trying to help! In any case, it seems to have helped in some small way and hopefully, Ruby will continue to improve. Rosie already seems to be fine. Lorelei, on the other hand, although she did eat that cornbread like she craved it, she is so thin and weak, I hope she can regain her strength soon. I'll just keep trying to get her special foods and mealworms are on my list to restock.
