My girls are about 12 weeks & about 1/2 to 1/3 the size they will be full grown. They look like fully formed hens, only smaller & their wattles aren't completely grown out or colored in yet.

Most likely your "meat birds" are Cornish X's-- they are specifically bread to grow very fast & be harvested at 8-12 weeks or so. They grow so large that they have health problems & usually do not survive very long. They might lay if they make it that far, but they are not "layers" & no one...

I think a lot of people associate keeping chickens with poverty and/or immigrants-- like "we don't have to keep chickens anymore"-- does that make sense? They think they are dirty & smelly & low class. It's sad, really.

I went to the feed store a couple of days ago & they had... leghorns, sex links, lacewing wyandottes, rirs, australorps, orpingtons, cochins, silkies & some others, but you know? I was not the least bit interested in bringing more chicks home to start all over again. I'm happy that my 6 girls...
