At a few days old, a hen will have her chicks out and about, teaching them to seek food. I personally do NOT stick to the temps in raising chicks. I watch their behavior. If they are huddling together, and making a lot of noise, they are cold. If they are splayed out for long periods and not...
Don't give up on broody hens! Or eggs that have been in the fridge!
This year, I had no roosters. Some died from I guess old age, and my main rooster died defending his hens from a hawk. But this beautiful Light Brahma wanted to be a Momma!!! After trying unsuccessfully for two weeks to...
27/30 They haven't slowed down much through-out this winter. I'm impressed, but overrun with eggs. Not selling them, and can't give 'em all away, so stuck with lots of eggs.
I put a mini-zip tie on the leg of which ones I wanted to identify. Only a few of mine are 'marked' though. I left the tie rather loose, and thankfully they have been OK. Was worried at first they would snag it on something as mine do freerange.
My son brought his gf over to meet us this weekend. First time meeting us. Instead of staying in out of the cold weather, he insisted on her going outside to the coop to see "HIS" chickens. Amazing enough, she never batted an eye, and went with him. Said she liked them. Hoping that means...
White Plymouth Rocks!!!
I did NOT raise mine to be held, carried around, etc. Of course as tiny chicks we played with them, but after about 6 weeks, I talked to them, fed them, etc. Mine now freerange, and when I open the back door, they all come running and follow me around the yard, and in...
I sympathize with ya! I too have an egg sucking dog. Mine is a mini dachshund. If she gets to the coop before I do, she eats the eggs that some lay in the milk crates. Before I realized she was eating the eggs, I left a full basket of them sitting on the kitchen table. The next morning...
mice
Seriously. One of the cats brought one into the house and was playing with it, so my son took it outside and threw it for the other cats to kill....the chickens beat the cats to it, and wouldn't let the cats anywhere near it. One chicken ran around the yard with that mouse for over an...
When you spend hours sitting on a cinder block in the chicken run so you can watch a new momma hen and her three new chickies. Got nothing else done today either! Sooo sweet!
All three have hatched. Gorgeous babies, and soo very tiny! All dark colored, and all EE crosses. I'm in heaven, and pray they all do OK during the night. Two seem awfully tired.
ZERO!! Though I've been trying, and I've been giving a dozen to people trying to get them hooked. Today I made egg salad, deviled eggs, two german chocolate pies, and a chocolate pudding pie. So I'm using them myself.
Been there! Except it was in my PANTS POCKET! And I leaned down to get the EEs egg that was in the window well, and as soon as I bent down, crack. I felt something warm and slimy going down my leg. YUCKY!
Congratulations!!!!
I also have pipping today! My White Rock only has three BA/EE eggs under her, and two of them are pipping, and the third I can hear a tap, tap, tap! WOOHOO! Mr. Roo did his job, and Momma Hen did hers!!! Now if I can only stay away and let them do their thing. I can't...
