    Ordering chicks

I have had great success with Ideal, ordering about 60 chicks and a handful of ducklings. I have had only a single loss in three shipments and she was awful tiny to start with. They do have a minimum order but I usually find a neighbor to order a few chicks with me. The quality of the birds...

    The predatot that...?

My neighbor called me today in tears,"Eloise is dead and two of my hens. I think it was a weasel." I felt so bad for my friend as she operates a fowl rescue and feels so responsible for all of her charges. I told her that I was so sorry and that I would bring my girl, Moxie, a Pit/Lab cross...

7 week old RIR not well.

Luvroos, I love your yolk idea. I give all of my babies, at about 2 weeks old - cooled, scrambled eggs. For a group of 6 babies, I do 3-4 eggs and for adult birds I do 1 egg per bird.I chop them up into small bits and when I feed them it is like a shark feeding frenzy.

7 week old RIR not well.

I haven't been on in some time - too busy with almost 50 chickens now. I might think of two situations- yes the heat, maybe a little overheating and dehydration. She is trying to stay cool by moving her wings away from her body, as you might recognize and panting is natural when...

Looking for a book on the topic of teaching horseback riding lessons

Great topic- I have been teaching for 6 yrs and have ridden for over 20 years, I take training and teaching very seriously.... I imagine when it is stated that the rider is not given the reins it means= the reins are available to the rider but that they are not allowed to hold them yet. The...

Is it normal for chickens to eat little critters?

I was mortified by my little velociraptors one day this summer - as I approached the outside run there were 2 or 3 chickens running around with something in their beaks. I got closer to find that one had the wing of an English sparrow in it's beak; another had the other wing and one was running...

First Time Broody - First Time Hatch

Thanks for the information. I have 3 d'Uccles, 2 dark brahmas, 3 japanese bantams, one buff brahma and an OEGB hen. I have a buff brahma, japanese and d'Uccle rooster with the girls - it is funny, the d'Uccle and Japanese stay with "their" kind and the brahmas stay with the brahmas. OK so I...

First Time Broody - First Time Hatch

I have a Japanese bantam that went broody. The first set of eggs she sat on for 3 days before another hen booted her out. So we moved her into a private suite and set 5 eggs under her that she hoarded. I have a few questions; 1) Do broody hens know if the eggs have gone south? 2) I was told...

    Cochins from Ideal

I have a black cochin bantam from Ideal, Blackie, named by one of the neighborhood children; His quality is quite fine with the exception of a single white feather on his foot. He is very young in this photo - mean little man, though.

    Staph Infection in Drake's Hock

I have a 2 yr old Runner drake that got his leg caught between a wall and the water bucket. Appeared to be sprained and then presented with the symptoms of staph. Their was a small scratch on the joint. Otherwise healthy bird with no apparent fractures. Our local vet is prevented from...

    Healing time for duck's leg

I posted this inquiry within the past couple of weeks, but could really use some help from the "ducksters" out there. My drake, a 2-yr old blue runner duck has been non-weight bearing for almost two weeks now. The "hock" joint is very warm and swollen 2x the size of the other leg. I took his...

    Phone company RANT!

There is a term for this, I believe that it is called stacking. I ran into this with the F company here in the northeast. The phone company allows third party billing. For example I got charged 19.99 for 3 months in a row - no authorization from me and it was for website development. I do my...

Just make this chick addiction stop!

Just get used to saying,"My name is ______ and I am a chickaholic." The other day I went to order some sex links to add to our standard flock and ended up ordering bantams- (3) Drk Brahma's, (3) Buff Brahmas, (3) Mille Fleur Belgian Booted (1) Black Japanese and (2) Buff Black Tailed Japanese...

    Healing time for duck's leg

About a week ago I found my drake with a swollen, very warm leg with no weight bearing. I believe that he got his leg caught between the water bucket and the cord of their heated water bucket. How they do these things - who knows? I am pretty sure that he sprained the femur/hock(?) joint. He...

Does anybody out there haveRunner Ducks for egg laying, any good?

I have 3 females and a drake. The girls started laying in late fall and are laying 2 eggs and for a while a 3rd egg. The eggs are jumbo size. I had never had a duck egg so I started using them in baking and mixing with the chicken eggs for scrambled, but lately I have been doing the duck eggs...

My girlfriends hen, (Barred Rock, 4+ years, laying, otherwise healthy, no avian vets in the area, quarantined from other hens to prevent picking), has a lesion in the joint at the base of one toe. It appears to have cracked and then sera came from the wound and became crusty. She is slightly...
