My lavender silkie's head is molting (you can see the little pinfeathers coming back), but in the meantime, there are two really long feathers that make it look like she has eyebrows/antennae! Probably the best she's been able to see in a long time, though.
Has anyone else ever had anything...
Proud silkie mama with a selection of her seven babies. After having a hen hatch and raise the chicks herself, I don't think I can ever go back to doing it myself! Much easier outsourcing it. :)
So, I lost a BO probably a month or so ago to what I THOUGHT was a raccoon. We put out a trap and have only managed to catch two skunks so far (a juvenile and an adult).
Why I thought I was dealing with a raccoon:
1. The night before the fatal attack, my husband awoke to some serious...
Disclaimer: we have no rooster.
My Jersey Giant hen refuses to leave the nest box. I don't know how many times I've gone out there and moved her out of the coop. Eggs or no eggs under her, she's always in there. What gives?? Should I just let her be or what? I worry about her getting...
In my pursuit to trap the Lady Buffington-eating raccoon, I managed to nab a skunk. Needless to say, the trap REEKS. Will a raccoon still go in a stinky, skunky trap or will they stay away because of said smell? I've done just about as much hosing as one can do.. it's been a few days and the...
Well, we lost a hen to a raccoon the other night.. of course it had to grab my favorite. Now we've got a live trap out there. It's only been one night, but how long do you suppose it will take to nab the raccoon? I have marshmallows and some apples smeared in peanut butter.
Any...
How long does it take for a Jersey Giant to get fully-grown? My two pullets just started laying so they're definitely not fully grown but they are still about the same size as my other pullets. I want some freakishly large chickens, darn it! On the plus side, they are gorgeous chickens. I...
Good grief, those things are pricey! At my local feed store, they wanted seventeen dollars for a container of sunflower seeds and forty-seven dollars for dried mealworms! Are people spending fifty dollars on chicken treats??
Has anyone else had any of their hens come down with a sudden limp? She's fine in every other way.. she just limps or hops to where she wants to go and usually ends up plopping down on the ground to peck the area around her. Still eating, drinking, laying eggs.. my husband and I looked at her...
This probably just applies to California people, since by the look of the website it's only distributed throughout the state. Nevertheless, anyone use it? I just picked up a bag at the feed store and am patiently waiting for my chickens to finish off their current bag so I can give them some...
I finally got an egg! Two eggs, actually. I found them today in a make-shift nest on the side of the house, so no clue how long they've been there or who laid them exactly.
I have two nest boxes in the coop with a fake egg in each to give them a clue, but apparently they didn't get the hint...
So, after the whole fiasco of my buff orpington hens turning out to be golden sexlink roosters (thanks to a mislabeling mishap at the hatchery), we now have two genuine buff orpington hens and a silver-laced wyandotte hen.
Here's hoping this go-around turns out better than the last time...
So, the jersey giants won't be coming in until a few weeks after the BOs. My husband has decided he MUST HAVE a jersey giant. Is it a super horrible idea to stick the new baby in with the two other BOs we'll have? Maybe just keep them separated for a bit..?
So, basically after the three buff orpington female chicks I got five weeks ago turned out to be some sort of white rock cross, all ROOSTERS (thanks feed store), I am officially chickenless (the feed store agreed to take them back and credit us).
I am debating whether or not to try chicks again...
So, I got these three little buff orpington hens five weeks ago from the feed store. Only one is SUPER light and the other two are all spotty (blonde with brown, mostly in the shoulder area). And there's this one with a bigger comb and yeah.. not too happy with the feed store. I think I have...
SO, rather than the three BO chicks I thought I had it looks like I'm ending up with one BO and two golden sexlinks. Thanks, feed store! Anyway, I have never had a sexlink before. Basically, my question is; what are they like? I have one that seems to be pretty dominant- I can't figure out...
I have one little chick that spins circles when she gets freaked out. Is this normal? She's healthy and acts like the other ones, just spins more.
It's been awhile since I've had chicks and I haven't noticed my other two doing it. She's a buff orpington and around a little over a week old.
