Supposedly the knife in the mouth also helps release feathers for processing. We did this once but I can only do it when dh is here as I can't do that. Some great ideas to try as I ordered 25 meat birds this year. I have always personally used the nails in the stump and a machete.
Personally the only thing I can do is head chopping. But I do agree I have just injured and then had to hit again. It makes me actually cry. But if you devise something to hold the head and neck in place it shouldn't happen.
I have often found that if we trust God he will make the bad stuff into the best. So happy you found someplace like that. It looks like a beautiful place to live.
I have been mostly in your shoes. I was a single mom with 4 kids and had lived in the house we had for 2 years. We had a beautiful garden spot which thank God we had not planted. Big difference was our landlord first said we could stay until he sold it then decided we needed to be out in one...
I tell myself every year I will not get so many. Then oh my, I need to help keep a heritage breed going, oh but which one? Can't decide? Order a few breeds, eggs on BYC, gotta try my bator out again. lol. Cuz it is fun, I have the room, and I am obsessed with all kinds of poultry.
I will add you to my prayers. Went through something similar with my friend last year and we still have some pretty rough days but God has brought some pretty cool blessings out of the ashes.

Light brown, but I dream of the day a chocolate colored bird lays chocolate colored eggs, don't you???
Maybe someone needs to develop a chocolate Maran.
I love my buff orps and my neighbor really likes his but I have had other people tell me they don't have much luck with their laying ability. I would think a Buff rock wouldn't be much different than a barred rock but not sure. I have great luck with my barred rocks also. I like Rhode Island...
Don't know about Cheyenne. In Sheridan county Sheridan lets you have hens but no roos. The funny part is you can't have chickens in the little tiny towns of under 500 people. Not that everyone listens. Been wanting to heads people in this area up, we are having a chicken swap, selling, etc in...
Most of my family think I am crazy with the exception of an aunt and cousin who will drive all over Idaho for a chicken auction. I like being crazy. It keeps me from going insane!
Two things come to mind. My oldest daughter was born on the 21st of Dec, and the year my husband surprised me with a spinning wheel I watched in the yarn store for a couple of years.

I have 2 Bourban Toms who think they are dogs now but when I had the hens none of them were really friendly. I had heard they were more flighty before I got them.
I lost all my Bourban hens this year but am planning on restocking and starting one other breed this year. My sister and I are planning on growing our whole Thanksgiving dinner next year.
I lost all my bourban red hens and 1 tom to a coon. Not to mention a few chickens. The coon met his end last night so I would like to replace my turkeys. I am willing to travel within reason. That would encompass any state next to Wyoming. I also am looking for a Meramma puppy. Tired of coons.
Welps hatchery has the Russian Orloffs and Mottled Javas. I am sure they probably aren't show quality but they arrived healthy and have remained so. I also love dealing with them. Both birds are cold weather friendly. Another good cold weather breed are Buckeyes. Next year I hope to get...
