2 day old chicks, an Unexpected Journey.
I was not planning on getting chicks yet, but here we are. They are in a 2'x6' brooder with a premier 1 heater plate. It is going to get down into the 30's the next couple of nights, but 66 degrees this afternoon as the wind shifted from the south. My...
I have several young pullets, about 2.5 mos old.
The last few nights, when I have to manually move them all from roosting on top of their old coop (for the babies...) into the big coop, they all seem to have a swollen or full crop, to some extent anyway. Everyone seems to be pooping, they have...
My Dad had many colloquial sayings, and I remember most.
There's one he said a few times, and I can't quite remember, but the gist was that chickens are too dumb to come in out of the rain, look up in the rain and drown. Don't be a chicken.
I may even be combining a couple with this memory.
Long...
17 chicks, mixed breeds,
Noticed yesterday that a polish chick was being pecked, head and tail and had intended to separate her today. She was dead this morning.
When I found her, there were 3 others looking similar, but I was late to work.
Wife and kids just found one of the 3 lying down, but...
Not sure what is going on.
I normally order from ideal, as they are close, and I get the chicks the next day.
Unfortunately, they're booked until may.
Ordered from McMurray, got them in 2 days. Lost one in transit, no biggie. Got them Thursday and I've been losing 1 -3 per day. Today is...
Buff Orp rooster. Big beautiful boy, but we already have a rooster. He is not the dominant of the two, and doesn't seem to be aggressive.
Troy-Temple area
We have a big beautiful ameracauma boy, been doing his thing for a couple of months.
We also JUST realized that we also have a buff roo... he obviously plays second fiddle and blends in... until he was attempting to mount one of the ladies ... duh...
Question is, can I expect a lot of trouble...
Ok, I think I have one Roo.
I know the buff orps (4)
There are 5 easter eggers.
So, I have the 2 white ones ( leghorns?)
The red one and one that may be a barred rock. I think they may have thrown in an extra ee?
Here goes...
I started out with a shallow dish (< 1 inch) for my chicks, which worked well, but ran out quickly and got nasty.
Since then I have used the standard large plastic waterer, (round, red and clear) (gets nasty)
They could not activate the cups, and don't need to understand the horizontal nipples...
Red swollen looking butt with some discharge on fluff. She is pecking at it, along with a couple of helpers.
What is best treatment?
Was told to rub it with vegetable oil with a q tip...
They should be here next Thursday or Friday!
Said screw it and figured I would get ahead of the curve on chicken math. I ordered 15!
:barnie:thumbsup:wee
About to order chicks, but want to make sure that I am ready. I am a Neeeeewwwbie...
I have the nursery coop ready (Not brooder)
So, I need:
brooder box (cardboard, wood? plastic tote?)
heat lamp?
PND
waterer
Starter crumbles
What am I missing?
The hatchery that I'm ordering from offers an option of getting Grogel plus b supplement.
Says that they send enough for 100 chicks. I'm probably getting 10.
So...
Is this a good supplement?
Is it a waste with so few chicks?
Ready, Set...
GO!
I'm in Central Texas, and despite the temps the last week (14 degrees? wth?) hot weather is our norm.
Our Neighbor swears by Orpingtons for gentleness, but I understood them to not be great with the heat? Suggestions? I will have them in a tractor, and will try to free range them on pasture later...
I am so new to chickens, I haven't even gotten my chicks yet!
Looking forward to getting started, probably with Ameracaunas and/or easter eggers.
My concerns are the Texas weather and predators, currently perusing the threads...
I found out about BYC while I was cruising for tractor designs, as...
