Hi all!
I would love to get a bunch of Salmon Favorelles this coming Spring. I'm close to Sandhill Preservation but unsure of their quality and a little concerned about getting straight run. Has anyone gotten Salmon Favorelles from them? Or does anyone know of someone who breeds them? In a...

Wow! I must say I'm thinking that maybe I am more of a city girl and not so much country! I just can't do that. But, I can dress a trout any day!

This may be a bit graphic here !!!!!!
We butcher our own,. I am a bit of a tight-wad and can't take the thought of adding a processing fee to what it has already cost me to buy and feed the bird. The first time, DH had a friend help him, but now I usually do.
I'm still trying to get...
I loved all the pictures! Pretty chickens!
Thanks to everyone for their input on the whole butchering idea. Ugh - no fun. Trish, nope those Wellies went to Troy at the show in Iowa City. This is my last roo (thank goodness!) and he's the BLRW that I've been trying to pawn off on someone...

Thanks for the info! I only have the one Roo, any ideas how much I should expect to spend?
Feather stubs?!? Hum, I have no idea what those are. I don't think he has any. He is only a little over 4 months old. So maybe he wouldn't be ready to butcher?

I had to haul mine to Sumner last year north of Independence. I think there are a couple others in Iowa, but none closer to me. 2 hours one way. I probably should just break down and do it myself

Baby chicks! Sounds like fun!
I hate to ask, but does anyone know what options there are for butchering chickens in the Cedar Rapids / Anamosa area? I can't do it myself. But I'm not sure where to go!

Did I forget to say he's FREE? My chicken coop is about 10 feet from my neighbor's window and the little roo is practicing his crowing! Yikes!!
I live East of Cedar Rapids if anyone is interested...
I have a 4 1/2 month old Blue Laced Red Wyandotte rooster, if anyone is interested. He was ordered from McMurray Hatchery
and is a nice, friendly chicken. He's filling out nicely too. He was the cutest one of the chicks, so he was held a lot. He's pretty spoiled also.
I'd keep him, except I...

I have. I ordered 25 last Fall and they all arrived healthy including the two free exotics (roos ). They are now 4 months old and I haven't lost a single one!
My only complaint was that I ordered pullets but quite a few of mine were roos and the McMurrary customer service wasn't too...

I'm not a real experienced chicken-owner, but from what I've read chickens don't need heat or light. Some people do give light through the winter so their chickens continue to lay. It's a matter of personal preference. I don't, only because we do not have electric in our coop or...
Hi!
I was just curious what most BYC members here in Iowa do to keep their coops warm in the Winter?
This is my first Winter with chickens. All mine are 3 1/2 months old and so far I haven't had any light or heat on in the coop. But... I'm getting a little nervous since it's getting so...

I know right? I didn't intend to get any but Trish brought out her secret weapon and I couldn't say no. Her new rooster Sampson is amazing!
Trish, I don't suppose you have a picture of him?
Yes, she tried that on me and I was trying to be good and didn't bite on it! Now I'm kicking...
