    Olandsk Dwarf Chickens

Oh gosh that is so nice! I was actually breeding these for a while but have had to cut back on breeds and so reluctantly I am letting these go. :( I was poking around on line a bit to see what people were charging these days and noticed that Greenfire was no longer breeding them. I guess...

Does anyone know why Greenfire stopped selling olandsk dwarfs?

Great pics! I really love the partridge-y pattern in the dark brown feathers on this girl.

Not sure about the foreign breed hurdle, but I think there would have to be a standard developed, which would take time. Leg color, comb shape, orangish versus redish, etc. I know people working on getting the tolbunt polish admitted as an accepted variety, same with the mille fleur cochin...

So my incubators are back up and running after taking the winter off. I have 12 silkies, 8 seramas, 4 d'uccles, 25 bantam cochins, 8 olandsk dwarfs and 2 tolbunts (possible tolbunt x cochin cross - LOL!) cooking away, set to hatch on February 20. I am trying the "dry hatching" method for the...

Is anyone looking for Olandsk eggs? I have 18 ready to ship in the morning - I was collecting for someone who had to cancel her order at the last minute. Please pm me if you are interested and we can discuss details. Thanks ps - LOVE the pics of the brooder full of OD chicks!!!

Actually I think the question of whether people are trying to come up with an SOP is very interesting. As you saw from the Greenfire article there is no SOP, landrace birds develop differently in different villages/neighborhoods, but I am interested in how folks here are approaching their...

I have noticed in my flock that the boys with white legs tend to have much more red in their feathers, like Seabrightsrock's photo, while the boys with yellow legs have more orangey feathers. Has anyone else noticed this in their flocks?

Brechin - hope you got my reply. Having trouble getting private messages to go through.

Brechin, I have pairs and trios avilable - some are about 3 months old, and I have one pair that is almost 6 months.

You are very welcome! As I said, you are welcome to come over and see/hear them for yourself. Have you received your eggs yet?

Brechin, the little guys can really carry a tune - not deep and LOUD like their larger fowl brethren, but you still know there is a rooster in the yard. Most of my boys sleep in "motel rooms" in the garage, so that their early morning choir practice doesn't bother the neighbors up the hill...

I had one chick that was this blond - had a bit of a brownish splotch on its head. I didn't band it, and lost track of which it was as the chicks aged. Kept thinking I would be able to tell, and then one day...poof...he/she blended in with the rest. I have one pullet that has a much lighter...

I have found that high humidity in lockdown is a bad thing with the Olandsk - I have had better luck with lower humidity in lockdown. Read back a few pages in this thread for some discussion on the humidity issue. Good luck with the hatch - be sure to post pictures of the little ones when...

What a silly time of year to go broody. Mine too. Lisbet is the only one of my Olandsk hens to get broody so far, and this is her 3rd time this year! Not letting her sit on eggs though, even though her sisters are giving her 3 or 4 a day to sit on. I have to pull them every day, and she is...

I will definitely be consulting with you before I do any of this - no way I'll remember this in a few months!

Maybe hedge your bets and lockdown some on Saturday night and some on Sunday night? You can also backtrack 18 and 21 days from Tuesday and look at your calendar for that day to see if it makes sense that you would have set eggs on either of those days.

Interesting - I haven't heard this before. I will give this a try as well! It is just so frustrating to have such good fertility and then have the little ones not make it out.

I am definitely going to try dry hatching. Interesting info on MG and MS, which are so prevalent in the chicken world and so hard to detect unless a bird gets stressed and shows symptoms. Oh, and by the way, CUTE grandchickens!!!
