Thank you for this very thorough explanation - LOVE IT! I especially like that you provided your description of what you feel a good mate would be for this male in order to move the breed pen forward. Although this is not one of my breeds, it's ALWAYS helpful to read feedback that is so...
One last note on this line of thought - from a moderating standpoint, we DO take into consideration the thread and the thought behind the original intent of the thread. For example, a comment like, "I would chop off the head of that bird & eat it" would be viewed differently in the Heritage...
By way of clarification, we DO allow feedback when made in a helpful, constructive way. We do not allow bullying or flaming. Like most walks of life, the lesson to take is that it's mostly not about what you say, but how you say it.
Please consider this a firm warning: this thread is NOT intended for bickering, for breed club comparisons, for "she said/he said," etc. Y'all need to be respectful and appreciative that we have folks like Walt to pop in and help with most excellent feedback.
If I were Walt, I'd be taking a...
So sorry that I haven't updated the "judging" file - I have been unable to get feedback on what the problem is with the post, but I'll be happy to PM to those who have asked. Anyone else, just shoot me a note & I'll be happy to send along.
normanack - thanks for posting! Her back should be flat, horizontal to the ground (not uphill), and longer. To me, her tail is a bit too long. Also, her eyes are not dark enough - they should be almost black. It's great to see another specimen - thanks!
I'm not sure how to post a PDF, but I have this wonderful and interesting article on the history of the Giant copied from the March, 1924 edition of Pultry Tribune. There are several articles (inlcuding one on how to judge them) from that issue that are just so interesting...but I thought I'd...
I do have one more picture of one of my hens that shows the lovely underline - I hesitated to post this picture earlier, as the angle she's standing at makes it appear that she has a "U" shaped, short back, which she does not. But, it is a nice example of the underline:
Okay, I'll start. I have been working with Giants now for 6 years. I prefer not to say where my original lines came from, but after a year of growing each out (from 3 different breeders), I was disappointed to say the least. My most recent line I have had for two years now, and I am quite...
sheepishly raising hand...this is an interesting though, that of "balance" in a bird. I was just having this discussion with someone offline. I would LOVE to "go there" if we might in this thread.
raising hand.............
Walt, when you say she needs a bit wider head, how do you tell that from a picture? Or are you speaking front to back? (I was assuming you meant side to side)?
Fred, it looks like the very first picture in top row of that last one you posted is also crow headed - or, could it just be that the bird's neck is stretched forward?
Walt, can you explain "crow head" with some detail? I've seen this description used quite a bit with Marans, but I don't understand exactly what it means.
Aoxa, thanks, I love the pattern, too. Throw a pattern into the SOP mix and it's yet one more thing to work on, though. It's the same male in all 3 pics. I did have a second for awhile, but he simply wasn't adding anything to the mix, so he's gone now.
Bob, tell me what needs fixing...other than size, please! Many, many thanks!
I, too, hope that one day, this variety will take off. They are dear to my heart.
