I set 22 last fall, they were a gift from my mom, (she knows I'm a hatchaholic). I ended up with only hatching 2 cockerels out of the batch, but they did endure a long journey from the store to my incubator.
Has anyone grown out and used their TJ roos for breeding? I have mine over EE hens, but he has turned into a very obnoxious rooster. He crows nonstop and is starting to attack people. I really want to cross him with my young olive egger pullet for fertile eggs but I don't know if I can stand...
I heard the TJ farm that raises these egg is in Sonoma Co. I Live up in OR too.I will have to stop in at a closer TJ the next road trip. They are available in Redding but my hatch rate was real low.
The local reptile pet store only feeds fertile eggs to the animals. Something about how fertile eggs last longer? I'm not sure about that, but I've traded dozens of fertile eggs for tons of crickets...
I might have to set some of the welsh harlequin duck eggs, they are laying like crazy and it seems a waste to let them just go to the fridge.I just hatched abunch of olive eggers, they shoulould be sex-linked looks like I have 8 cockerals and one pullet. Oh dear...:/
I picked up some duck eggs at whole foods. They wern't marked "fertile" but I thought I would give them a try, just in case. None developed. Got some trader joe eggs in the incubator right now looks like 11 are still going strong, 10 days to go. I heard Winco over in Corvallis sells turkey eggs...
Yeah, they are the ones marked " fertile". They are refrigerated and look to be scrubbed clean, (maybe even bleached?). I'm sure it reduces the hatch rate but some eggs just really want to hatch.
My mom picked up 2 dozen Trader Joe eggs for me on her trip. Best mom ever! The Juliain date is 202 so they should be 8days old. I can't wait to see if they hatch! I've been wanting to join the Trader Joe hatching club for a long time!
:yuckyuck
I stopped letting my mom come in the store with me because she always "helps me" by asking the clerks, alway a disaster. I just do my thing sneaky and search all the cartons.
Yes these ones were all multi-colored eggs. They didn't say fertile on the box but they do have a YouTube video of their pastured jens, and I swear I saw an Austrolorp roo in one of the frames...so I thought I would give them a try. :idunno:idunno I've got that one dark egg in the incubator...
It is quite the challenge to find fertile grocery store eggs up here in Oregon. I picked up these last week and after candling tonight I had 10 infertile, 1 too dark of a shell to tell, and OMG ONE BLOODRING!!! Ok, I guess that's not the best results for grocery store eggs, but wow, that does...
