We have to board our 2 horses. That has been the main expense other than an unplanned vet visit. We pay $125. per horse/month and maintain our own fences and pasture. We feed them about 6lbs per day ea of cubes plus grass. Also, we did not shoe our boys until last month. Hombre got shoes on his front only and we hope to go back to barefoot in a few??? We also let them graze or can cut grass (Hawaii) almost year around but we are very careful because the sugar content. Then there are the saddles, bridles x2,3, bits x2,3, blankets and pads x for fashion!, leads, whips, sheets, halters x 3,4, EZ boots, salt lick, fly spray, fly masks x 2,3, trailer, bigger truck, shampoos and combs, sandrid, electrolytes, hoof guard vitamins, "hoof potions"... oh! trainer!!! Way cheaper than the ER, we have done both :hmm Gas going back and fourth 3 miles x at least 2x a day. Saddle soaps etc. Teeth floating, physicals, worming x2 per year. I'm sure I forgot a bunch of stuff. Grateful we don't need a barn and hay. With all that said I think chickens cost more and take more of my time lol. I wouldn't trade it for nothing. We don't spend lavishly anywhere else. Our animals are our babies.
But I do recommend getting an older 12+ well trained, well loved horse. That can save you a ton of time and $$$. How about starting with riding lessons, even if you can already ride? Gets you in-the-know of who, what and were for your area and the best horse deals. Trainers and Farriers, the beauty salon of horses, got the skinny on everything horse

Seeing my daughter smile like this again after losing her sweet mare a year prior is all it takes to know he is the one for her.
They are having a grand time building their partnership.
