Neighbors dog killed chicken

Crazy talk- I do have a chicken wire covered run. I can't do electric fences. I have a chicken wire fence. The dogs have ripped through it. It's about 5 feet or so. Foxes and other preditors circle but can't get in. Pit bulls go through it and rip a hole.

In most states where you're allowed to use deadly force on a dog bothering livestock, it is animal cruelty to use a bb-gun, or even some small caliber weapons. You can kill the animal, but you can't maim it. This isn't any difference than states having laws about what calibers you can use to hunt specific animals.

Indian Kool Aid - why can't you put up fences (or electric)? Seems like an easy solution that would keep neighbor problems to a minimum.
I can't have electric fences due to small children. Hence why I offer to teach dogs not to attack brirds.

My chickens are close to egg laying age. We were all outside when my neighbors dog came over and wanted a belly rub. Next thing I know, chickens are running to me, screaming. Sprayed the dog with water and she disappeared behind the cars. Did a chicken count was missing my favorite black maran. We searched and found no sign. Drive to my neigh or and there was the dog with my chicken, dead, and half plucked. Calling animal control in the morning. Neigh or has not returned my call, but that dog is not coming back to my yard. I am so upset over this. What does my neighbor owe me?

In our state the law reads you are allowed to shot any dog or other animal that is chasing or killing your livestock without fear of prosecution .animals are concerted to be a source of lively hood. however some cities in Tn. have laws against shooting guns in the city limits check the local laws be fore shooting any ones dog or cat .also do not threaten the dogs owner in anyway .a typed letter mailed to the owner would be the best way to handle this be nice explain how you were brought to tears by the loss of your chicken do not ask for money give them a chance to do the right thing . If they do not Value the chicken at $50.00 and take them to small claims court. every time you see the dog lose call animal control regarding the other neighbor every time I saw the dog in the street I would call animal again and again and again before I would shoot the dog record all calls this gives you a history of the problem also have your good neighbors call about the dog this gives you a witness if you are going to do this do it right. never be the aggressor . Let the jerk with the lose dog do that. If you do talk to the dog owner have a witness It should not be family member get a friend you if can sorry about the loss of your pet

I have small children as well plus multiple electric fences. Size charger properly and help child learn. The family car and bathtub are much more dangerous than the fencing.
Agree here. Getting hit by an electric fence isn't a whole lot of fun, but modern chargers are pretty safe. My 4lb ducks get zapped by them all the time.

I agree. I grew up with electric fencing and remember my mom teaching my younger sister not to touch it. Did we occasionally get zapped if we were careless? Sure, but we learned. With a 1 year-old just run a second fence of temporary plastic mesh netting around the electric. Will prevent any accidents until the child is old enough to learn. Then, when the child is old enough, say around 3, do what my mom did. Shut the fence off and then go and touch it in front of your child. Pretend as though it's live and jump back, yelp and cry, fall on the ground holding your hand and holler "It's hot! It burns!" Trust me, seeing that will give your child a healthy respect for the fence.
