I added a little bit in there. It's petty, maybe, but Horse Bedding Pellets have been an extremely affordable way for us. They are about $8 for 40#. In our main coop, it takes not quite four bags to put down a couple of inches. Those are changed out once per year. So $32/year.
In the breeder coops, too soon to tell, as we just finished building it in January, but the same pellets laid then are still fine.
In the brooders, we place an inch of pellets and cover half of them with paper towels for the first few days. After that, no more paper towels or puppy pads. I stir them every couple of days as their little feet don't scratch them around like the chickens do in the coops. I'll change their pellets out either if they're sold for the new batch, or after about 4-6 weeks. It takes about 1/4 bag per brooder. So $2, assuming they went outside after a month. I don't know the cost savings over using paper towels and/or puppy pads, then pine shavings for a month, but I'm sure it's a significant amount more than $2.
Thanks, it's not for everyone, but for those who use it, it works awesome!I added a little bit in there.![]()
