Flock Staples

Flock Staples

Though not my absolute favorite breeds, Easter-eggers, Marans, naked necks, Orpingtons, and Plymouth Rocks have become staples in my mixed flock for their individual beauty, fun personalities, entertainment value, or for the beauty they bring to my egg basket. As such, I hope to always have at least one of each in my mixed flock going forward!

Easter-Egger

Endymion

Endymion.jpg

Name: Endymion
Nickname(s): Dym-Dym, Dymi, Dymothy
Sex: Female
Variety: N/A
Egg: Medium-large and deep green
Origin: Meyer Hatchery in Polk, Ohio
Hatch Date: May 16, 2016
Random Fact: Dym-Dym does do some awfully dumb things sometimes, hence the nickname, but I actually would consider her one of the sharpest birds I have owned overall.

Merlin

Merlin.jpg
Name: Merlin
Nickname(s): Merl, Merl-Girl, Merly-Girly
Sex: Female
Variety: N/A
Egg: Medium-large and very pale turquoise-blue. She has not laid an egg in at least two years now.
Origin: Tractor Supply Co. (Sold as an ‘Americana’)

Ophelia

Ophelia.jpg
Name: Ophelia
Nickname(s): Fifi, Feef', Beardy Bird, Fifi-Foofy
Sex: Female
Variety: N/A
Egg: Medium-sized and vivid turquoise blue
Origin: Meyer Hatchery in Polk, Ohio
Hatch Date: April 22, 2019
Random Fact: Fifi has the floofiest beard of any chicken I have ever owned! When she was a chick, I was constantly having to trim it back to keep it out of her eyes. As an adult, she thankfully no longer has that problem!

Wynne

Wynne.jpg

Name: Wynne
Nickname(s): none
Sex: Female
Variety: N/A
Egg: Medium-large and pale turquoise colored
Origin: Purchased from a local farm (Sold as an ‘Americana’)
Hatch Date: May 11, 2011
Random Fact: Wynne is... How to put this lightly... Not the sharpest tack in the drawer. Her pastimes include eating the other Easter-eggers' beards, and burying her whole head in any of the other chickens' butt fluff.

Marans

Mavis

Naked Neck

Gwenyth

Gwenyth.jpg

Nickname(s): Gwen, Gwenny
Sex: Female
Breed: Naked neck bantam
Egg: small, somewhat pale tan
Origin: Dunlap Hatchery in Caldwell, Idaho

Orpington

Izzy

Isolde.jpg

Name: Isolde
Nickname(s): Izzy, Izzy-Bizzy, Izz-Bizz
Sex: Female
Variety: Blue
Egg: Large and brown
Origin: Meyer Hatchery in Polk, Ohio
Hatch Date: July 6, 2021
Random Fact: When Izzy was a chick, on the drive home from the hatchery, she jumped out of the box and nearly got lost in the car we were riding in!

Plymouth Rock

Findlay

Findlay 7-29-22.jpg

Name: Findlay
Nickname(s): Finnie
Sex: Female
Variety: Barred bantam
Egg: Small and pale tan with brown speckles
Origin: Meyer Hatchery in Polk, Ohio
Hatch Date: July 6, 2021
Random Fact: Finnie is named in honor of the harrowing day we had picking her up from the hatchery. The car broke down on the way home, we were stuck at a rest stop for hours and hours, took a wrong turn on the way home, and didn't get home until after dark! Findlay was the city in Ohio we erroneously turned toward instead of the direction we needed to go to get home.
