Pipd’s Peeps!
The Birds of my Flock

Current happenings and updates on my flock posted here: Pipd's Peeps Thread

This is just a directory of all of the birds currently in my flock, including a picture of each bird, their breed / variety, origin, and hatch date if known. I've divided this into several parts to make it a little shorter and have less load time for others who, like me, don't have the fastest internet speeds for pictures. You can use the dropdown at the top of the page or links at the right (on larger screens and computers) to navigate. Below is a listing of who is on which page.

Chickens

Chickens are my heart and soul, my passion. My flock has grown over the years, from a mere dozen or so TSC chicks to over one hundred birds from various sources.

Who are you looking for? You can search for a name (ctrl or cmd + F) and find out which page they are on from here!

Favorite Breeds

Favorite Breeds

My favorite breeds are Dorkings, Cochins, and Old English Game bantams. Because I have so many silkied Cochin bantams and breed them so there will always be many of them around, they are on their own page despite being one of my favorite breeds. My smooth Cochin bantams will be listed here, however.

Achernar

Achernar.jpg

Feldon

Feldon excuse me.jpg
Name: Feldon
Nickname(s): none

Variety: Khaki Silver Duckwing bantam
Crow: "cock-a-DOO-dull" - high-pitched, shrill

Crow: "squawk-a-DOO-DULL" - high-pitched, somewhat shrill
Origin: Hatched from my flock (Winston x Sybil)

Mallow

Mallow.jpg

Origin: Hatched from my flock (Winston x Sybil)

Sex: Female
Variety: Silver Duckwing bantam
Egg: Tiny and tinted white
Origin: Hatched from my flock (Winston x Sybil)
Hatch Date: June 5, 2020
Random Fact: Sumi is, to date, the only Silver Duckwing OEGB I have ever been able to hatch. Oddly enough, despite the colors having equal odds of being produced in the cross I was doing, I got a ton of Khakis and only one plain Silver Duckwing.

Vega

Vega.jpg
Name: Vega
Nickname(s): none
Sex: Female
Variety: Fawn Silver Duckwing bantam
Egg: Tiny and tinted white, usually especially oblong
Origin: Hatched from my flock (Winston x Sybil)

Random Fact: Vega does not know what personal space is. If I'm outside, then she wants to be on my lap, or on my shoulder, or on my feet, or into whatever I'm trying to do, or pecking my ankles, etc.

Silkied Cochin Bantams

.
Silkied Cochin Bantams

This page specifically has my beloved silkied Cochin bantams on it, starting with my breeding groups and ending with retired breeders, culls that I kept in my mixed layer flock, and any oddballs that I've hatched and kept in the mixed flock as well.

Blue, Black, Splash

My goal is to breed these birds toward the standard for smooth bantam Cochins, along with attempting to select for lighter Blues as silkied feathering tends to make Blue look quite dark, sometimes indistinguishable from Black at first glance. I am hoping to see improvement as I select for the very best in my breeding flocks.

A history of my breeding flocks year by year is located on this page.

Flock Staples

Flock Staples

Though not my absolute favorite breeds, Easter-eggers, Marans, naked necks, Orpingtons, and Plymouth Rocks have become staples in my mixed flock for their individual beauty, fun personalities, entertainment value, or for the beauty they bring to my egg basket. As such, I hope to always have at least one of each in my mixed flock going forward!

Easter-Egger

Endymion

Endymion.jpg

Name: Endymion
Nickname(s): Dym-Dym, Dymi, Dymothy

Merlin

Merlin.jpg

Sex: Female
Variety: N/A
Egg: Medium-sized and vivid turquoise blue
Origin: Meyer Hatchery in Polk, Ohio
Hatch Date: April 22, 2019
Random Fact: Fifi has the floofiest beard of any chicken I have ever owned! When she was a chick, I was constantly having to trim it back to keep it out of her eyes. As an adult, she thankfully no longer has that problem!

Wynne

Wynne.jpg

Name: Wynne
Nickname(s): none

Variety: N/A
Egg: Medium-large and pale turquoise colored
Origin: Purchased from a local farm (Sold as an ‘Americana’)
Hatch Date: May 11, 2011
Random Fact: Wynne is... How to put this lightly... Not the sharpest tack in the drawer. Her pastimes include eating the other Easter-eggers' beards, and burying her whole head in any of the other chickens' butt fluff.

Marans

Mavis

Mavis.jpg

Name: Mavis
Nickname(s): Mavey, Nosy Marans
Sex: Female

Orpington

Nickname(s): Izzy, Izzy-Bizzy, Izz-Bizz
Sex: Female
Variety: Blue
Egg: Large and brown
Origin: Meyer Hatchery in Polk, Ohio
Hatch Date: July 6, 2021
Random Fact: When Izzy was a chick, on the drive home from the hatchery, she jumped out of the box and nearly got lost in the car we were riding in!

Plymouth Rock

Findlay

Findlay 7-29-22.jpg

Name: Findlay
Nickname(s): Finnie
Sex: Female
Variety: Barred bantam
Egg: Small and pale tan with brown speckles
Origin: Meyer Hatchery in Polk, Ohio
Hatch Date: July 6, 2021
Random Fact: Finnie is named in honor of the harrowing day we had picking her up from the hatchery. The car broke down on the way home, we were stuck at a rest stop for hours and hours, took a wrong turn on the way home, and didn't get home until after dark! Findlay was the city in Ohio we erroneously turned toward instead of the direction we needed to go to get home.

Silkies, Mixes, and Misc. Breeds

Silkies, Mixes, and Misc. Breeds

I at one point had many Silkies and mixes of them in my flock. When I started breeding silkied Cochin bantams, I realized I liked them a lot more as a breed with silkied feathering. These are the remnants of my once fairly Silkie-centric flock. I have also listed the breeds unrelated to the Silkies here that were one-offs, gotten as a whim or just for fun.

Silkie

Reuben

Reuben.jpg
Name: Reuben
Nickname(s): Reub, Reuby
Sex: Male
Variety: Paint
Crow: "cock-a-doodle-ROOO" - medium-deep pitched
Origin: Rehomed from another BYCer
Hatch Date: October 2014
Random Fact: Reuben is the only rooster I have had to try and fight off a hawk swooping at the hens!

Winter

Winter.jpg
Name: Winter
Nickname(s): Winty, Wint
Sex: Male
Variety: White (from a mixed color crossing of Paint x Porcelain)
Crow: "cock-a-dooDLE-EE-doo" or sometimes "cock-a-doodle-little-loo" - medium pitched
Origin: Hatched from my flock (Reuben x Margaret)
Hatch Date: March 10, 2016
Random Fact: Winter has a very musical crow that's hard to properly describe in text.

Silkie Mix

Amaretto

Amaretto.jpg
Name: Amaretto
Nickname(s): none
Sex: Female
Variety: mixed color (dominant White x incomplete Partridge / Red)
Egg: Small and tan with beautiful speckling
Origin: Hatched from my flock (Winter x Abra)
Hatch Date: June 5, 2020
Random Fact: Amaretto is one of those hens that really, really wants to go broody, really badly does, but isn't much interested in rearing the resulting chicks.

Ganymede

Ganymede.jpg
Name: Ganymede
Nickname(s): GanyMEAN
Sex: Female
Variety: mixed color (dominant White x whatever random Partridgey Easter-egger genes Maggie had)
Egg: Small and grayish
Origin: Hatched from my flock (Winter x Maggie)
Hatch Date: April 19, 2019
Random Fact: Ganymede was named after the largest moon of Jupiter because when she hatched she was HUGE for a chick! She also had a HUGE comb at hatch, making me sure she would be a cockerel. Oddly enough, not only is she a hen, but actually ended up much smaller than her brothers were, about the size of a Silkie hen!

Peanut Butter

Peanut Butter.jpg

Name: Peanut Butter
Nickname(s): PB
Sex: Female
Variety: Partridge? (from a mixed color crossing of dominant White and incomplete Partridge / Red)
Egg: Small and pale tan
Origin: Hatched from my flock (Winter x Abra)
Hatch Date: June 4, 2020
Random Fact: Despite looking very convincingly like a Silkie, Peanut Butter is, indeed, a Silkie mix. Just goes to show how many dominant traits Silkies have! The one recessive trait they do have is silkied feathering, which PB only ended up with due to her Cochin mother having that trait as well.

Miscellaneous Breeds

Harriet

Harriet 7-29-22.jpg

Name: Harriet
Nickname(s): Hair
Sex: Female
Breed: Cream Legbar
Egg: Pale blue, round, and quite large for her size
Origin: Meyer Hatchery in Polk, Ohio
Hatch Date: July 6, 2021
Random Fact: Harriet has the craziest, flippiest, foldiest single comb I've ever seen!

Rangi

Rangi.jpg

Name: Rangi
Nickname(s): none
Sex: Female
Breed: Ancona
Egg: Large, white, and very round, reminiscent of a large ping pong ball
Origin: Meyer Hatchery in Polk, Ohio
Hatch Date: May 12, 2013
Random Fact: Rangi lost a large portion of her comb and half of her right wattle due to a cold snap occurring immediately after a flood in the coop during her very first winter. Despite this, her comb is still pretty huge most of the year--but in the wintertime it shrinks to about half the size!

Roha

Roha.jpg
Name: Roha
Nickname(s): none
Sex: Female
Breed: Exchequer Leghorn
Egg: Large and white
Origin: Meyer Hatchery in Polk, Ohio
Hatch Date: May 12, 2013
Random Fact: Roha hates to see anyone else get attention from me, especially Rangi. But she also does not want me to give her any attention and will flee if I try to pet her.
